English translation
'Umar ibn Abi Salamah (RA) said: I was a boy under the care and upbringing of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. One day I was eating with him and my hand was roaming all over the plate (that is, instead of eating from what was in front of me, I was reaching here and there). So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me: "Say Bismillah, eat with your right hand, and eat from the side that is next to you (that is, eat from what is in front of you)." (Bukhari)
Eating and drinking are among the basic necessities of life. Just as the true religion has taught its followers to eat pure and wholesome things, it has also explained the manners of eating. Three manners of eating are mentioned in the above hadith.
The first manner taught is that one should begin eating by saying Bismillah. The second is that one should eat with one's right hand. The third is that one should eat from the food in front of oneself in the dish, and not pick and choose from in front of others. This applies when several people are eating together from one large dish and the food is also of a single kind; some other narrations show that if the foods are of different kinds — such as different fruits — then it is permitted to reach in every direction.
One hadith states that any food over which Allah's name is not mentioned, Shaytan considers lawful for himself (Muslim). Another hadith states that if one forgets to mention Allah's name at the start of a meal, one should say: "Bismillahi awwalahu wa akhirahu" (that is, in the name of Allah at both its beginning and its end) (Abu Dawud). One hadith describes the merit of saying Bismillah as being that it brings blessing (barakah) to the food (Tirmidhi).
Eating with the right hand is also among the manners of eating. One narration describes eating and drinking with the left hand as the act of Shaytan — that is, eating and drinking with the left hand is the way of Shaytan (Muslim).
This hadith also teaches that instruction in religion and upbringing should begin from childhood; parents and mentors should keep watch over children's habits and behaviour, and guide them as needed. May Allah make us all learn the teachings of our Prophet ﷺ and act upon them. Ameen.
