English translation
Sahl bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "I and the one who raises an orphan — whether the orphan is his own or someone else's — will be in Paradise like this (close together)." Saying this, the Prophet ﷺ pointed with his forefinger and middle finger and kept a slight gap between the two. (Bukhari)
Any society within which even a little humanity is alive bears responsibility for boundless compassion and cooperation towards the weak, the helpless, and the needy; and then an Islamic society, whose very foundation is laid upon well-wishing, tenderness, and self-sacrifice, is truly a "house of safety" (dar al-aman) for every weak person; and then an individual as "helpless and frail" as an orphan is, of all humanity, the most deserving of care, kindness, tenderness, and compassion.
In the Noble Qur'an and the teachings of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ we have been clearly enjoined to fulfil the rights of the weak and needy classes, and great rewards from Allah the Exalted have been announced for doing this. Just as raising an orphan, caring for him, and treating him well is a great good deed, so wronging him, oppressing him, and misappropriating his wealth is an extremely base act and a cause of severe reckoning in the Hereafter. Allah the Exalted says:
"Those who unjustly (wrongfully) consume the wealth of orphans are only filling their bellies with fire, and soon they will enter a blazing Fire." (An-Nisa 10)
That is, those who breach trust in the wealth of orphans should know that this is a very great sin; its seizure in the Hereafter is severe and its punishment extremely painful. Whoever consumes the wealth of an orphan without right is as though filling his belly with the fire of Hell, and his abode in the Hereafter is the Fire.
In this noble hadith the special reward to which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ pointed for the one who raises an orphan is that in Paradise there will be an extremely small distance between me and the one who raises an orphan. The Prophet ﷺ explained this by raising his index finger and the middle finger next to it, keeping a little distance between them, and showed that: as small as the distance and difference you see between these two fingers of mine, exactly that much will be the distance and difference in Paradise between my station and the station of that believing man who, for the pleasure of Allah the Exalted, bears the burden of sponsoring and raising an orphan in this world. That is, between the rank of prophethood — which is the highest rank — and the rank of the one who raises orphans, there will be such a close distance.
At the same time, by saying "whether the orphan is his own or someone else's," the Prophet ﷺ also made clear that this merit is for sponsoring and raising any orphan — whether that orphan be his own relative, such as a grandson or nephew, or a stranger, that is, someone with whom he has no particular relationship of kinship.
May Allah the Exalted grant us all complete certainty in these realities, and grant us the blessedness to which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has encouraged us in this his noble saying. Amin!
