English translation
It is narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “There are two phrases that are light on the tongue but heavy in the scales (that is, their reward will be heavy in the balance of deeds) and dearly beloved to Allah, the Forgiving. (And those two phrases are:) Subhan Allahi wa bi-hamdih, Subhan Allah al-'Azim (Glory be to Allah and praise be to Him; Glory be to Allah, the Magnificent).”
In common usage, the remembrance of Allah (dhikr) refers to glorifying and sanctifying Allah the Exalted, affirming His oneness and majesty, and describing and reflecting upon His greatness, grandeur and perfect attributes; while in the broader sense it includes prayer, the recitation of the Qur'an, supplication, seeking forgiveness and so on — all of which are among its special forms. In reality, it is this remembrance of Allah that is the foremost means of nearness to Allah and His pleasure, of a person's spiritual progress, and of his connection with Allah the Exalted.
It is the very demand of a believer's life that the remembrance of Allah should permeate every fibre of his being. Without this constant remembrance, even those acts of worship performed at specific times cannot show any special effect. That is why in the Noble Qur'an not merely remembrance but “abundant remembrance” has been enjoined: “O you who believe! Remember Allah with much remembrance.” (Al-Ahzab 33:41)
The remembrance of Allah is in reality the name of obedience and submission to Allah the Exalted. Whoever obeys and submits to Allah has in truth remembered Him and kept Him in mind; and whoever does not obey Allah and does not heed His word is not one who remembers Him, however much tasbih he may recite and however much he may recite the Qur'an. So the real importance lies in a person keeping Allah in his heart at all times. When he does so, then surely, by its blessing, the grandeur and greatness of Allah will take firm root in his heart and he will take care to abstain from disobeying Allah.
In this hadith, the statement of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that these two phrases are light on the tongue and beloved to Allah can be easily understood; but understanding how they can be heavy in the scale of deeds may perhaps not be easy for some people. The point is this: just as material things are light and heavy, and instruments called scales (mizan) exist to measure their weight, in the same way many non-material things too are light and heavy — such as heat and cold, which manifest warmth and coolness. Clearly these are not material objects but states; yet their lightness and heaviness are measured by means of a thermometer. In the same way, on the Day of Judgement the name of Allah the Exalted will have weight, the words of remembrance will have weight, the recitation of the Qur'an will have weight, acts of worship will have weight, faith will have weight, and the fear and love of Allah will have weight. At that time it will become plain that some very small and light phrases will be exceedingly heavy.
On one occasion the Prophet ﷺ said: “Everything has some kind of polish, and the polish of hearts is the remembrance of Allah.” (Bayhaqi)
The remembrance of Allah is a matchless remedy for a person's inner self. Just as, before old objects are polished, their dirt, grime and dust are removed and then a shine is produced upon them, likewise the remembrance of Allah removes the corrosion of the heart and the filth of the inner self and illuminates it with the divine light — for the remembrance of Allah is the soul of all acts of worship. Therefore there is no doubt that it is also superior to and better than all other acts of worship. May Allah the Exalted grant us all the ability to remember Him with true certainty. Amin!
