English translation
Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said: “Those who perform Hajj and Umrah are the delegation of Allah (they are His guests who go to His court); if they call upon Him, He answers their supplication, and if they seek His forgiveness, He forgives them.” (Ibn Majah)

This hadith sheds light on the reality of Hajj and Umrah. Hajj and Umrah are, in truth, the servant's attendance at the court of Allah Almighty. In such a case, given the mercy of Allah Almighty, is it possible that He would reject the requests of those who have reached His door bearing pure hopes and wishes? Certainly, then, Allah Almighty will accept their supplications, and if they seek His forgiveness, He will forgive them. Like Hajj, Umrah too is an act of worship performed together with visiting the Ka'bah. Umrah may be performed at any time, whereas Hajj has a fixed time. Concerning the times of Hajj, Allah Almighty says: “The months of Hajj are appointed.” (Al-Baqarah 197) — and they are Shawwal, Dhul-Qa'dah and the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah. The point is that Umrah is permissible at any time of the year, but Hajj takes place only on specific days; therefore it is not permissible to enter its ihram outside the months of Hajj. Umrah is performed alone, while Hajj is performed in a collective form. In Umrah, some of the very rites of Hajj are carried out. Besides this, Hajj has been made obligatory upon those who have the capacity to perform it, as Allah Almighty says: “It is a right of Allah upon the people that whoever is able to reach this House should perform Hajj to it.” (Aal-e-Imran 97). But Umrah is not obligatory. The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said: “Three persons are the guests of Allah: the one who strives in jihad, the one who performs Hajj, and the one who performs Umrah.” (Nasa'i and Bayhaqi)

One who goes for Hajj should strictly avoid any custom or manner in which there is a suspicion of ostentation and show. Although the acceptance of any deed as righteous and accepted depends on its being purely for the sake of Allah, in Hajj in particular this needs even greater attention, because it is a final measure for spiritual transformation and the purification of the self and character; and the spiritual patient who is not cured even by this comprehensive treatment has very little hope of being cured by any other treatment. Therefore it is essential that the pilgrim's intention be solely the pleasure and good approval of Allah Almighty, with no other aim before him, as Allah Almighty commands: “Complete the Hajj and Umrah purely for Allah (for His pleasure).” (Al-Baqarah 196)

Then such a pilgrim, who has come as the guest of Allah Almighty and as a supplicant at His door, has become devoted to Him and circles His house, having left everything—his home, his family, his business—present solely to fulfil the command of Allah Almighty: if the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate God does not hear him, then whom will He hear? And if He does not fulfil his hopes and longings, then whose will He fulfil? The Generous Master who bestows even upon His enemies—how could He send away His lovers, the guests of His house, the beggars at His door empty-handed? Never! To harbour such an ill thought about the Most Bountiful of the bountiful, the Giver of givers, the Master of the universe—God forbid! It is for this very reason that the Master of both worlds (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said: “Whoever attends Arafah and then brings to his heart the thought that his sins have not been forgiven—there is no greater sinner than he.” (Daylami)
