Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said: “One Umrah is an expiation for the (minor) sins committed between it and the next Umrah; and the reward of an accepted Hajj (Hajj Mabrur — a Hajj accepted in the sight of Allah) is nothing less than Paradise.” (Bukhari and Muslim)

In this hadith the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) has stated the excellence of Umrah and Hajj. The excellence of Umrah is that it is an expiation for sins—that is, an expiation for all the minor (small) sins committed between the two Umrahs. Because of this good deed, Allah Almighty forgives past sins; Umrah removes the evil effects of sins from the human self and grants a person purity. Umrah is not only a means of populating and enlivening the House of Allah; rather, the flourishing and adornment of hearts is also bound up with it. Just as with the obligatory prayers there are supererogatory (nafl) and sunnah prayers, and with the obligatory fasts there are supererogatory fasts, in the same way, along with Hajj, Allah Almighty has also appointed the worship of Umrah, as is stated in the Holy Qur'an: “Complete the Hajj and Umrah for Allah.” (Al-Baqarah 196)

Umrah is a minor Hajj; thus it comes in a noble hadith: “Umrah is the lesser Hajj (a small Hajj).” (Ibn al-Hajj). Now, what is the difference between Hajj and Umrah? This should be understood. In Hajj there are the standing at Arafah and the standing at Muzdalifah, the stoning of the Jamarat, the tawaf, the sa'i between Safa and Marwah of the House of Allah, and shaving the head or trimming the hair; whereas Umrah means the tawaf of the Ka'bah, the sa'i between Safa and Marwah, and shaving the head or trimming the hair. Ihram is a condition for both. Hajj may be obligatory, sunnah, or supererogatory; whereas Umrah, unlike Hajj, is not obligatory—it is only sunnah and supererogatory.

Hajj is one of the greatest acts of worship. Out of love for Allah Almighty, a person leaves his business and his dear ones and companions and undertakes a long journey. Moreover, this journey of his is not like ordinary journeys; on this journey he remains turned towards Allah Almighty. As the House of Allah draws nearer, the fire of his yearning and love flares up all the more; he feels ashamed of his sins, repents from a sincere heart, and seeks from Allah Almighty the ability to do good deeds. When he enters the land of Hijaz, his sense of the truth and greatness of Islam increases beyond measure. The moment he beholds the Ka'bah of Allah, such an impression of the greatness of Allah Almighty and His religion settles in his heart that it is never effaced until death. Through all the rites of Hajj, the imprint of Tawhid (the Oneness of God) is established upon a person's heart. Then, for such a servant, why should there not be glad tidings of Paradise from God, the Lord of Majesty and Bounty?

Hajj Mabrur means such a Hajj in which all the etiquettes of Hajj have been observed, which is pure and sincere. Hajj is so great an act of worship and so powerful a demonstration of a person's character and faith that the one who performs it is deemed deserving of Paradise in the sight of Allah Almighty—provided that after Hajj he does not adopt in his life any conduct contrary to the worship of God. It is obvious what greater thing there is than Paradise, which is what a person desires most of all. How great a reward this is from Allah Almighty! The true success and triumph of human beings is to enter Paradise for ever and ever in the Hereafter, and the true loss is to be deprived of Paradise. Allah Almighty says: “Whoever is drawn away from the Fire and admitted into Paradise has indeed attained his goal; and the life of this world is nothing but the merchandise of delusion.” (Aal-e-Imran 185). May Allah Almighty accept the Hajj of all Muslim men and women who go for Hajj, and grant them the fruits and benefits of Hajj. Amin, O Lord of the Worlds.
