English translation
Narrated by Umm al-Mu'minin Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her): the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is no day on which Allah frees more of His servants from the Fire than the Day of Arafah. (That is, on this Day of Arafah, at Arafat, Allah issues to sinful servants — on the greatest and widest scale of all the days of the year — the decree of forgiveness and release from Hell.) And (indeed on that day) He draws near to His servants (with His mercy and forgiveness), then He boasts of those performing Hajj before the angels and says, 'What do these people want? (Whatever they desire, I shall grant it to them.)'"

Arafah is the name of a specific place, and Arafat is its plural. It lies about twenty-five kilometres from Makkah al-Mukarramah and roughly six miles from Mina. It is a vast, open plain, surrounded on three sides by hills, with Jabal al-Rahmah on its northern side. The ninth of Dhul-Hijjah is also called Arafah. Standing (wuquf) in the plain of Arafat, for a while, from the afternoon of the ninth of Dhul-Hijjah until true dawn of the tenth, is the greatest pillar of Hajj, without which Hajj is not valid.

On the ninth of Dhul-Hijjah, in the blessed plain of Arafat — a special day for the descent of mercy and blessings — hundreds of thousands of Allah's servants gather there in the guise of the poor and needy, answering His call and raising their voices in Labbayk and takbir. They display their utter humility before Him, seek His favours and forgiveness, and offer supplications and lamentations, weeping and imploring before Him for mercy and forgiveness for themselves and for others. Then the boundless ocean of the mercy of the Most Merciful of the merciful surges, as the Hadith Qudsi says: "My mercy shall prevail over My wrath." (Bukhari, Muslim, Ibn Majah and Nasa'i). And then, in keeping with His generous majesty, Allah decrees the forgiveness of sinful servants and their release and freedom from Hell — decrees so great that even Satan is left burning with rage and beats his own head, as another hadith says: "Satan is never seen more disgraced, more humiliated, more rejected and cursed, and more consumed with rage than he is on the Day of Arafah — and that is only because on that day he sees Allah's mercy pouring down in torrents and the pardon of the greatest sins being decreed." (Muwatta Imam Malik)

On this day Allah's mercy is exceedingly close to His servants. This great gathering in the plain of Arafat carries such blessings and distinctions that they cannot be described. Countless servants of Allah benefit from the blessings of this blessed assembly and are deemed worthy of forgiveness in His sight; the lives of countless people are coloured by this gathering with the hue of pure monotheism, and Allah decrees for them release from the Fire of Hell — just as, on the Day of Gathering, He will decree forgiveness for many people. There is no doubt that this great assembly of Hajj has a close connection with the Day of Resurrection; this gathering presents an image of how we shall stand in the plain of Gathering.

This great assembly — which portrays the scene of turning back to Allah and of the servants presenting themselves before Him — is exceedingly beloved to Allah, and Allah expresses His pleasure before the angels in these words: "For what purpose have My servants gathered here? Surely it is the longing for My mercy and forgiveness and the desire to fulfil My command that has drawn them here."

As for the non-pilgrim, the fast of Arafah is, in reality, so that he too may share and have a portion in the mercies and blessings of this day that descend upon the pilgrims at Arafat. Its aim is that the believing servants of Allah who could not join the Hajj may, by fasting on this day, take some share of the very special mercies and blessings of this day.

May Allah make us too worthy of this virtue, and protect every Muslim from the Fire of Hell. Ameen.
