English translation
It is narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "O sons of Abd Manaf! Take care to save your souls from (the punishment of) Allah. O children of Abd al-Muttalib! Save yourselves from Allah's punishment. O Umm Zubayr, aunt of the Messenger of Allah! And O Fatimah, daughter of Muhammad (peace be upon him)! You too save yourselves from Allah, for I have no power to save you from Allah's punishment (without faith). Yes, ask of me whatever you wish from my wealth."

In Surah al-Baqarah, verse 48, Allah, the Lord of Glory, has said: "Fear a Day when no one shall avail another in the least, when no intercession or recommendation shall be accepted, no ransom or compensation taken, and none shall be helped."

Shafa'at means intercession, and the weight of an intercession can be of three kinds: (1) Intercession by influence, which is accepted on account of some relationship or worldly interest, because not accepting it may cause one harm. In the court of Allah, the Lord of Glory, there is no hope for intercession by influence, for what threat can anyone pose to Him? (2) Intercession by love, which is accepted on account of someone's love, so that the intercessor's recommendation is not rejected for fear of displeasing him — but what standing does anyone's displeasure have before Allah? (3) Intercession by mercy, in which the intercessor makes his plea after observing, for instance, the temperament and pleasure of a ruler or officer; and in reality, on the Day of Judgement, intercession in the court of Allah, the Lord of Glory, will be of this mercy kind alone. The intercession of the prophets and saints mentioned in the Holy Qur'an is precisely this intercession of love. Thus the martyr will intercede, the memoriser of the Qur'an will intercede, infants who died while still nursing will intercede, and the righteous of the community will intercede. But the whole process of intercession too will be set in motion by Allah, the Lord of Glory, Himself. No one will dare to intervene of his own accord or intercede without permission. Even the Great Intercession of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) will not take place without permission. And that intercession will be granted only in favour of those people whose salvation Allah, the Almighty and Majestic, has already willed to grant before the intercession.

So in truth, intercession is a gift of Allah, and that too only for those who depart this world with their faith intact. Some people fall prey to the misconception that "we are the descendants of such-and-such saint," or "we are the disciples of such-and-such spiritual master," or "we have a connection with such-and-such beloved of Allah," and that they are such that if they insist, Allah will simply have to accept their intercession — whereas the reality of His court is that without permission one has no power even to open his mouth; only the one granted permission will say anything, and intercession will be accepted only for the one in whose favour permission is granted. Allah, the Lord of Glory, has said: "Who is there that can intercede with Him except by His permission?" (al-Baqarah 255)

Therefore, O Muslim! Before your death, be concerned for your Hereafter and set your thinking straight. Purify yourself of innovations, of empty customs, of ignorance and stubbornness, for after death only regret will remain. Turn towards the One in whose hand is everything, and turn your gaze away from the one in whose hand there is nothing. On the Day of Judgement no one will avail another — neither father, nor loving mother, nor wife, nor children, nor wealth; there will be only deeds, and the grace of one's Master!
