یہود و نصاریٰ کی اتباع
حضرت ابو سعید خدری رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ سے روایت ہے کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے ارشاد فرمایا کہ: "یقیناً ایسا ہوگا کہ تم (یعنی میری امت کے لوگ) اپنے سے پہلی امتوں کے طریقوں کی پیروی کرو گے بالشت بہ بالشت اور ذراع بذراع (یعنی جس چیز کی طرف وہ جس قدر بڑھتے تھے تم بھی اسی قدر بڑھو گے، جس چیز کی طرف وہ ایک بالشت بڑھے تھے تم بھی ایک بالشت بڑھو گے اور جس چیز کی طرف وہ ایک ذراع یعنی ایک ہاتھ بڑھے تھے تم بھی اسی قدر بڑھو گے) یہاں تک کہ اگر وہ گوہ کے سوراخ میں داخل ہوئے تھے تو تم بھی داخل ہوگے"۔ سوال کیا گیا یا رسول (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم) کیا پہلوں سے آپ (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم) کی مراد یہود و نصاریٰ ہیں؟ ارشاد فرمایا تو اور کون ہیں"۔ (بخاری و مسلم)
رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے جس طرح عقائد و ایمانیات، عبادات، اخلاق اور معاشرت و معاملات، امر بالمعروف و نہی عن المنکر اور جہاد فی سبیل اللہ وغیرہ کے بارے میں ہدایات دیں اور امت کی رہنمائی فرمائی، اسی طرح مستقبل میں واقع ہونے والے دینی زوال اور انحطاط، تغیرات اور فتنوں کے بارے میں بھی امت کو آگاہی دی ہے اور ہدایت فرمائی ہے، اللہ تعالیٰ نے آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم پر منکشف فرمایا تھا کہ جس طرح آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سے پہلے کی امتوں میں دینی زوال اور انحطاط آیا اور وہ طرح طرح کی گمراہیوں اور غلط کاریوں میں مبتلا ہوئیں، اور اللہ تعالیٰ کی نظرِ عنایت سے محروم ہوئیں، ایسے ہی حالات آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کی امت پر بھی آئیں گے، اس انکشاف و اطلاع کا مقصد یہی تھا کہ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم امت کو آنے والے اس خطرہ سے آگاہ کریں اور اس بارے میں ہدایات دیں، تا کہ امت اپنے آپ کو ان پہلی امتوں کی گمراہیوں اور غلط کاریوں سے محفوظ رکھنے کی فکر سے کبھی غافل نہ ہو۔
اس حدیث مبارکہ میں رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے ارشاد کا مطلب یہ ہے کہ یقیناً ایک وقت ایسا آئے گا کہ میری امت کے کچھ لوگ پہلے کی امتوں کے گمراہ لوگوں کی قدم بقدم پیروی کریں گے، جن گمراہیوں اور غلط کاریوں میں وہ مبتلا ہوئے تھے، یہ بھی ان میں مبتلا ہوں گے، یہاں تک کہ اگر ان میں سے کسی پاگل نے گوہ کے بل میں گھسنے کی کوشش کی ہوگی تو میری امت میں بھی ایسے پاگل ہوں گے جو یہ مجنونانہ حرکت کریں گے، یعنی اس طرح کی احمقانہ حرکتوں میں بھی ان کی پیروی اور نقالی کریں گے، یہ دراصل کامل پیروی اور نقالی کی ایک تعبیر و تمثیل ہے، آگے حدیث میں ہے کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کا یہ ارشاد سن کر کسی صحابی نے عرض کیا کہ ہم سے پہلی امتوں سے کیا یہود و نصاریٰ مراد ہیں؟ تو آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے ارشاد فرمایا: تو اور کون؟ مطلب یہ کہ ہاں میری مراد یہود و نصاریٰ ہی ہیں۔
ایک اور حدیث میں اس طرح آتا ہے کہ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے ارشاد فرمایا کہ قیامت اس وقت تک قائم نہ ہوگی، جب تک میری امت اپنے سے پہلے لوگوں کا طریقہ بالشت بہ بالشت اور ذراع بذراع اختیار نہ کرے گی، اس پر سوال کیا گیا کہ یا رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم مثلاً فارس اور روم (کی اتباع کریں گے)؟ ارشاد فرمایا کہ اور ان کے سوا پہلے لوگ کون ہیں۔ (بحوالہ بخاری)
ان حدیثوں میں آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے جو کچھ ارشاد فرمایا تھا وہ سب کچھ آج ہمارے سامنے موجود ہے، بنی اسرائیل کے عوام اور علماء نے جو حرکتیں کی تھیں وہ سب ہمارے زمانے میں موجود ہیں، دین میں بدعتیں نکالنا، کسی صاحبِ دولت کے دباؤ سے مسئلہ شرعیہ بدل دینا، دین بیچ کر دنیا حاصل کرنا، مساجد کو سجانا، حیلے بہانوں سے حرام چیز کو حلال کرنا وغیرہ وغیرہ سب کچھ اس دور میں موجود ہے۔
ان دونوں احادیث کو ملا کر علماء کرام نے یہ نتیجہ اخذ کیا ہے کہ دین کے بگاڑنے کے بارے میں تو یہ امت یہود و نصاریٰ کے پیچھے چلے گی اور سیاست و حکومت کے معاملات میں فارس و روم کا اتباع کرے گی۔

English translation
It is narrated from Abu Saʿid al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Certainly you (that is, the people of my ummah) will follow the ways of the nations before you, span by span and cubit by cubit — that is, whatever thing they advanced towards, and however far, you too will advance to the same extent; whatever they advanced towards by a span, you too will advance towards by a span; and whatever they advanced towards by a cubit (that is, an arm's length), you too will advance to the same extent — until, even if they had entered the hole of a monitor lizard, you too would enter it." It was asked: "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, by 'those before us' do you mean the Jews and Christians?" He said: "Who else would they be?" (Bukhari & Muslim)
Just as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave guidance concerning creed and articles of faith, acts of worship, morals, social conduct and dealings, enjoining good and forbidding evil, striving in the way of Allah, and so on, and guided the ummah, so likewise he informed and guided the ummah about the religious decline, deterioration, changes and trials that would occur in the future. It had been disclosed to the Prophet ﷺ that, just as the nations before him suffered religious decline and deterioration and became mired in all kinds of misguidance and wrong practices and were deprived of the gaze of Allah's favour, the very same conditions would come upon the ummah of the Prophet ﷺ too. The purpose of this disclosure and forewarning was that the Prophet ﷺ should alert the ummah to this coming danger and give guidance about it, so that the ummah would never grow heedless of the concern to guard itself against the misguidance and wrong practices of those earlier nations.
The meaning of the Messenger of Allah's ﷺ words in this blessed hadith is that certainly a time will come when some people of my ummah will follow, step by step, the misguided people of the earlier nations; whatever misguidance and wrong practices they were mired in, these too will fall into — to the point that if some madman among them had tried to crawl into a lizard's hole, then in my ummah too there will be such madmen who will perform this insane act; that is, even in such foolish acts they will imitate and copy them. This is in reality a metaphor and illustration of complete following and imitation. Further in the hadith it comes that, upon hearing this saying of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, a Companion asked: "By 'the nations before us' do you mean the Jews and Christians?" So the Prophet ﷺ said: "Who else?" — meaning: yes, my intent is indeed the Jews and Christians.
In another hadith it comes thus, that the Prophet ﷺ said: "The Hour will not be established until my ummah adopts the ways of the peoples before it, span by span and cubit by cubit." On this it was asked: "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, do you mean, for example, Persia and Rome?" He said: "And who, apart from them, are the earlier peoples?" (as reported by Bukhari)
Whatever the Prophet ﷺ foretold in these ahadith is all present before us today. The things the common people and scholars of the Children of Israel did are all present in our times: introducing innovations into the religion; changing a Shariah ruling under pressure from some wealthy person; selling religion to acquire the world; decorating mosques; making the unlawful lawful through pretexts and excuses — all of this and more is present in this age.
Combining these two ahadith, the scholars have drawn this conclusion: in matters of corrupting the religion, this ummah will walk behind the Jews and Christians, and in matters of politics and government it will follow Persia and Rome.
