English translation
It is narrated from Hazrat Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Acting with deliberation and unhurriedness is better in everything except in the deeds of the Hereafter." (Abu Dawud)

This world is defined by change in circumstances and events. Countless occasions come in life when a person must make decisions, and he does not know whether the outcome of carrying them out will turn out good or bad; therefore it is more fitting to act with caution and patience in them, and never to show haste. In contrast, there is no doubt about those deeds of the Hereafter that become a means of goodness and blessing — those about which the Qur'an and the Ahadith have spoken — in which one should on no account delay; who knows whether a person will again be granted the ability to do them or not. Allah the Almighty has said: "Hasten toward good deeds; to Allah alone you are all to return." (Al-Ma'idah — 48)

Thus, if a person has the eagerness to spend in the way of Allah the Almighty, he should not show the least slackness in it, for it may be that Satan casts other whisperings into the heart and holds him back from spending; because Satan frightens him that if he spends he will become destitute and penniless — yet when it comes to spending on evil deeds he does not let such fears come near, but rather adorns and beautifies those evil deeds so that a person spends the largest sums on them fearlessly and without a second thought. Thus it is generally observed that when a donation is sought for some good work, the man of wealth checks his accounts again and again over a hundred or two hundred, and often makes the one asking come round several times; whereas this same person spends his wealth lavishly on other frivolous, immoral and un-Islamic pursuits and feels no hesitation whatsoever in it.

In worldly matters, because of haste it often happens that we take a wrong step and then afterward regret what we have done. When there is some matter to attend to, one should look seriously at its every aspect and be reassured about its consequences; one should also consult others in this regard and adopt such a method and such a plan as is the best and most fruitful.

It has also been observed that, merely in view of some future possibility, a person hastily takes such a step in a matter — before its time and without need — that it becomes a cause of the utmost distress and remorse for him. The possibility in view of which he acted, when the time comes, turns out to be that circumstances are now different and that anticipated thing proves to be a mere dream and fancy. To take a step before its time, without some severe necessity, is to cast oneself into grave danger.

In reality the chief causes of haste and impatience are narrow-mindedness and superficial thinking, greed and covetousness, and a lack of sound reflection. Only a person of open heart and broad vision is in a position to pause and consider a matter seriously and adopt the course in which there is good; and a person who loves the good does not merely choose good and welfare, but in this way he becomes connected with Allah the Almighty. It is for this reason that Islam has laid down for its followers the principle of Istikharah before doing any work: before making any decision in the important affairs of life — such as travel, marriage, business matters, and so on — one should perform Istikharah. Istikharah means to seek good and welfare; in those important and lawful matters in which the aspect of good is not clear to people, Istikharah should certainly be observed, and then whichever way the heart inclines should be regarded as the decree of Allah and adopted. May Allah the Almighty grant us the ability to hasten in doing every good work, and to decide other matters with thought and deliberation. Ameen.
