English translation
Narrated from Ka’b ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “Whoever acquires this knowledge for the purpose of vying with the scholars, or disputing with the ignorant, or drawing people’s attention towards himself — Allah will admit him into the Fire (of Hell).”

Whatever the deed, it does not occur without intention and purpose. Every Muslim should, whatever deed he does — even if it be a small one — do it with the intention that it be purely for the pleasure of Allah. When performing a deed, one should form the intention: every act of obedience and worship — such as prayer, fasting, zakat, Hajj and Umrah, ablution, tayammum, i’tikaf, charity, helping someone, visiting the sick, walking with a funeral, attending a burial, greeting with salaam, replying to a greeting, calling to goodness and virtue, forbidding evil, accepting an invitation, attending gatherings of knowledge and remembrance, being present in the company of the scholars and the righteous, and so forth — in such deeds let the intention be solely the pleasure of Allah, and let no worldly aim be held. Likewise, spending on one’s household, hospitality, good treatment of relatives and kin, obedience to parents, honouring friends, elders and relatives, acquiring knowledge, teaching and instructing it, study and reading of books, authorship and compilation, a scholar’s explaining of issues, a teacher’s teaching of students, students’ acquiring of knowledge, encouraging students towards beneficial knowledge — indeed, even the fulfilment of everyday needs and necessities, such as eating, drinking, sleeping, meeting people, and so on — if in these tasks too the intention is the obedience and pleasure of Allah, then these deeds also become worship.

Without doubt, whoever is granted this intention in these deeds is fortunate, and whoever is deprived of this intention is deprived of a great good. May Allah grant us such a good intention that our every word, act and deed be for Allah alone. The importance of intention can be well gauged from the teachings of the Qur’an and Sunnah. It becomes clear that intention is such a light and easy act that everyone can do it at all times and thereby become a hopeful recipient of Allah’s reward. This is an act of the heart; its meaning is the resolve of the heart. A saying is very well known: “As the intention, so the blessing.” If the intention is good and sincere, even a small deed becomes great; and if the intention is not good — if there is in it the adulteration of showing-off and display, or if the world is the aim of some deed — then even the greatest of deeds becomes void. From the tiniest deeds of the noble Companions (may Allah be pleased with them all) and the righteous predecessors, those mighty fruits and results would appear which do not appear today even from the greatest of deeds. In the Holy Qur’an, in seven places and in various expressions, it is said “mukhlisina lahu-d-din” (being sincere to Him in religion) — that is, let every act of obedience be purely for Allah.

In this hadith too the Master of both worlds ﷺ has given the teaching of intention and sincerity in a most comprehensive manner — that is, knowledge should not be acquired for any base purpose. Like other tasks, in the acquisition of knowledge too one should always keep before oneself the pleasure and approval of Allah. If someone has acquired knowledge not for the pleasure of Allah but merely for fame, show and worldly gain, then there is no reward for him with Allah; rather, on account of this show and ostentation he will be deserving of severe punishment. In the Hereafter he will be deprived of the bounties of Paradise, and nothing but the Fire of Hell will fall to his share.

The people of knowledge and students should realise how important intention and sincerity are in the acquisition of knowledge. If by seeking knowledge one means the attainment of degrees and certificates, worldly rank and pomp, unlawful earnings and high posts, then such knowledge is a bane for a person, as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has stated in the noble hadith. Therefore, before the deed, there is need to learn sincerity of intention, because intention is more important than the deed. May Allah grant all Muslims the ability to do every deed with good intention and solely for the pleasure of Allah. Amin.
