English translation
Narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “I am to you like a father to his children — that is, just as it is every father’s responsibility to wish well for his children and to teach them the principles and manners of life, so too your instruction and upbringing is my task. (For this reason) I tell you (every kind of religious, moral and social matter): when you go to relieve yourselves, do not sit facing the qiblah, nor with your back to it (rather sit in such a way that neither your face nor your back is towards the qiblah).” (Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, says:) And the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم commanded the use of three stones for istinja, and forbade using dung and bone for istinja, and forbade performing istinja with the right hand.
There are many matters that appear outwardly dirty and repugnant, which a person neither draws attention to of his own accord, nor likes to be corrected about by another. Yet a father continues to instruct his children even about the smallest and outwardly dirty and repugnant matters. But those things which the fathers themselves do not know, and with whose refinement and decorum even the people of intellect and wisdom in the world are unacquainted — only the Prophets of Allah (upon them be blessings and peace) can teach them, for their station towards all human beings is like that of a father. And just as a father tells his children even the smallest matters without hesitation, so too the Prophets (peace be upon them) do not hesitate to convey any matter to their ummah. On this basis the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم conveyed these matters with a brief preface, so that after hearing them people would feel no shame, and would come to know that there is no need to be ashamed in telling or asking about good things.
Just as eating and drinking are among the basic needs of a human being, so too urination and defecation are attached to every human being. The true Prophet, the intercessor of the Day of Gathering صلى الله عليه وسلم, just as he gave guidance in the other affairs and other spheres of life, likewise also explained regarding urination, defecation, purity and istinja what is appropriate and what is inappropriate, what is correct and what is incorrect. After this, he صلى الله عليه وسلم gave guidance on four matters: First, that one should sit for urination and defecation in such a way that neither the face nor the back is towards the qiblah — this is a requirement of the respect and reverence due to the qiblah; every civilised person who has any awareness of subtle and spiritual realities considers it ill-mannered to sit facing or with the back towards a sacred and honoured thing while relieving himself. The second guidance was that at least three clods (dhelas) should be used for cleaning in istinja; however, if someone feels that more than three clods are needed for this cleaning, he may use more according to his need — because in our times every house has a toilet and the facility of water, so purity can also be attained with water alone. The third guidance was that istinja should not be done with a fallen bone of an animal, nor likewise with the dry dung of an animal; because in the age of ignorance (jahiliyyah) some Arabs used to perform istinja even with such things, so he صلى الله عليه وسلم explicitly forbade it. The fourth matter he mentioned in this connection was that the right hand — which is generally used for eating, drinking, writing, reading, giving, taking and similar tasks, and which our Creator has given greater capability and special preference over the left hand — should not be used for cleaning the filth of istinja; this too is something that every civilised person who has any awareness of human dignity will observe.
From this hadith, just as one gauges how much affection and attachment the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم had for his ummah in the matter of religious affairs and guidance and admonition, it is likewise learnt that obedience to the father is obligatory upon the children, and it is obligatory upon the father to teach his children the manners of those things that are among the necessary matters of religion. But — alas, a thousand regrets — today parents are anxious from the very beginning to give their children English education and to teach them English, and they load books upon children at an extremely young age, when they are not even truly accountable (mukallaf), and enrol them in schools; whereas, on the contrary, they pay not the slightest attention to the basic religious education, and children reach the age of puberty while remaining unacquainted with these basic matters and heedless regarding purity and impurity. And it is obvious that purity is an essential condition for a basic act of worship like prayer, and if this very condition is not fulfilled, how will that worship be accepted? Purity and cleanliness, while being an essential condition in the view of the Shariah for prayer and recitation, are themselves also a highly desirable and sought-after quality. Allah the Exalted has said concerning the pure: “Indeed Allah loves those who repent and those who keep themselves pure and clean.” (al-Baqarah – 222)
