English translation
Anas (RA) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Truly charity cools the wrath of the Lord and wards off an evil death.” (Tirmidhi)
A believer is a fountain of bounty and generosity; this is his fundamental attribute. Among the basic qualities of the God-fearing that the Noble Qur'an has mentioned is that they spend of the wealth Allah has given them. Thus, right at the beginning of Surah al-Baqarah, Allah said {wa mimma razaqnahum yunfiqun}, the translation of which is: and they spend of what We have provided them.
The believer's bounty and generosity is a spring that never dries up in any condition; through spending and charity the giver himself also benefits — his soul gains purity and his personality attains maturity. The saying of the Prophet ﷺ that Allah protects such a person from an evil death means a death such as:
1) A person cannot depart from the world with peace and tranquillity, but has to leave the world in distress and restlessness.
2) He is not granted the ability to repent, nor is able to utter the word of Tawhid with his tongue at the last moment, and departs from this world caught up in worldly regrets and longings.
3) He gives his life defending falsehood.
4) Death comes to him while he is engaged in sinful deeds, and he goes to Allah as one disobedient to Him.
5) He commits acts such as suicide.
A good end (husn al-khatimah) has great importance in a person's life, because what really counts is the ending. This hadith shows that the right means to please Allah and to extinguish the fire of His wrath is charity; through the blessing of charity a person is also favoured with the wealth of a good end. In reality, what Allah is pleased with is good character; that alone has worth and value with Him. The building of character is not possible without patience and self-sacrifice; without patience and self-sacrifice a person can never rise from lowliness. Charity is a prominent sign of the greatness of character. Charity is not merely an outward act; rather in reality it is the expression of an inner state which we interpret as joy of heart or openness of heart. This is a most precious thing; this is the true life. To grant us this life, the great caller of Islam, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, strove to the very end.
This is a purity which Allah Himself protects; He can never let go to waste the one who possesses this purity. How true was what Khadijah (RA) said when she saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ distressed on the occasion of the descent of the first revelation. She said: “By Allah, Allah will never disgrace you. You maintain ties of kinship, you bear the whole burden of the weak, you earn for the destitute, you honour the guest, and you endure hardships for the sake of truth.” Reflect: all these deeds are but different forms of spending in the way of Allah.
Whatever we give in charity, in reality we spend it upon ourselves. In common view, whatever a person spends on his own food, drink, clothing and the like is what he has spent on himself; but in truth the discerning eye knows that what a person spends in good works or upon others is in reality what he has spent upon himself, because in the Hereafter these deeds will become the means of his salvation, which is real success.
In another hadith it comes thus: when a person dies, the angels ask what he has sent ahead, while the people ask what he has left behind. (Reported by Bayhaqi.)
