Urwah ibn Abdullah says: Mu‘awiyah ibn Qurrah told me, on the authority of his father, “I came, along with some people of the tribe of Muzaynah, into the presence of the Messenger of Allah, and we pledged allegiance at his hand. I saw that the buttons (of his collar) were undone.” The narrator of the hadith, Urwah ibn Abdullah, says: “Whether in heat or in cold, I never saw Mu‘awiyah or his son with their buttons fastened.”

The entire life of the Holy Prophet was a model for the Ummah; the more fully a person conformed to that model, the further he advanced in the station of nearness to Allah. The devoted Companions of the Prophet had reached such a degree in following the Sunnah that if ever some act issued from him out of mere human nature, they too held fast to it until the last breath of their lives and would not tolerate the slightest increase or decrease in it. Here a few incidents are recorded of the Companions’ devotion and love for the Prophet.
(1) It is related concerning Hazrat Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that on a journey he turned aside a little at a certain spot. Someone asked why he had done so. He replied, “I had seen the Messenger of Allah do the same (at this spot), so I did it too.”

(2) This is an incident after Badr. A tribe, by falsely professing Islam, seized some of the Companions; among them were Hazrat Khubayb (may Allah be pleased with him) and Zayd ibn al-Dathinnah (may Allah be pleased with him). The tribe sold both of these men to the Quraysh of Mecca. Hujayr ibn Abi Ihab al-Tamimi bought Hazrat Khubayb in order to kill him in revenge for his father, who had been slain at Badr. When the polytheists of Mecca hung Hazrat Khubayb upon the gibbet, they put him under oath and asked him aloud, “Would you like it if Muhammad were in your place upon the gibbet?” He replied, “Never! By Allah, I would not even like that a single small thorn should prick the blessed foot of the Prophet in exchange for my life.”

(3) Hazrat Zayd ibn Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) relates that at the Battle of Uhud the Prophet sent me to search for Hazrat Sa‘d ibn al-Rabi‘ (may Allah be pleased with him) and said to me, “When you find him, convey my greeting to him and ask him how he is.” When I found him he was breathing his last. He had seventy wounds—some from spears, some from swords, and some from arrows. I said to him, “O Sa‘d! The Messenger of Allah sends you his greeting and asks how you are.” He said, “My greeting to the Prophet and to you; convey to the Messenger of Allah that I find myself in such a state that the fragrances of Paradise are reaching me; and tell my people, the Ansar, that no excuse of yours will be accepted before Allah if any enemy reaches the Prophet while a corner of your eye still stirs (i.e. while you still live).” The narrator says that at that very moment his soul departed.

(4) After the migration, when the Prophet reached Madinah the Illuminated, he stayed at the house of Hazrat Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him). The Prophet stayed on the lower floor and Abu Ayyub on the upper. The house was nothing but a hut of mud. Hazrat Abu Ayyub relates that one night a water jar broke and its water flowed out; my wife Umm Ayyub and I took our striped blanket—and we had no other covering besides that blanket—and began to soak up the water with it, out of fear that some of it might drip onto the Messenger of Allah and cause him discomfort.
