English translation
Abū Hurairah (RA) narrated that it was said to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, "Invoke against the polytheists and the disbelievers." He ﷺ replied: "I have not been sent as one who curses and invokes evil; rather I have been sent as a mercy."

Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, addressed the Master of both worlds ﷺ in the Glorious Qur'an and said:

"Indeed, We have sent you [O Prophet ﷺ] as a mercy to all the worlds." (al-Anbiyā' 107)

This is an astonishing proclamation from Allah, made in a Book which it was Allah's decree would be recited in every part of the world and in every age of human history after its revelation. Those who recite it will number in the hundreds of millions, and the succession of people who reflect upon it, expound it, investigate its every letter, and test events against its touchstone will likewise not end until the Day of Judgement. The vastness and the grandeur of this proclamation are both so extraordinary that they can never be grasped in a cursory glance. In every respect of time and place this is a mighty proclamation. Its vastness in time is that, from the mission of Muhammad ﷺ until the Day of Judgement, whatever generations come into the world and whatever ages of history pass, this proclamation encompasses them all. Its vastness in spatial extent is such that no corner of the world is excluded from it. Generally two measures are used to determine the importance, grandeur and worth of a thing — one is quantity and the other quality — and this Qur'anic proclamation comprises both these aspects: that is, through the mission and prophethood of the Prophet ﷺ, through his noble person and his teachings, the benefit that reached humanity, and the door of mercies and blessings that was opened, is — in its scale and abundance, its quantity and quality — without parallel or likeness.

"Mercy" is a much-used word in our lives; it applies to everything from which a person gains benefit or comfort. But the greatest manifestation of mercy is to save the life of a dying patient, or to give support to a man breathing his last and become the cause of his new life. Yet the supreme manifestation of mercy is to save the whole of humanity from destruction; and there is a difference like that between heaven and earth between one destruction and another, and between one danger and another: one is a transient destruction and a short-lived danger, the other an eternal destruction and a perpetual danger. The mercy that the Messengers of Allah show to people cannot be measured against ordinary mercies. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ dealt with his people with the greatest kindness and mercy: he enriched them with the supreme blessing of tawḥīd (the oneness of God) and saved them from everlasting loss.

The condition of Arabia at the time of the Prophet's ﷺ mission can be well gauged from this verse of the Noble Qur'an:

"And you were on the brink of a pit of Fire, and Allah saved you from it." (Āl ʿImrān 103)

In the Prophet's ﷺ time the disbelievers and polytheists were the bitterest enemies of him and of the religion of truth he brought; they inflicted every kind of torment upon those who believed in him ﷺ, so much so that the Prophet ﷺ had to leave his dear and sacred homeland, Makkah. Even after that their mischief continued, until at one point his noble Companions requested: "O Messenger, invoke against these cruel wretches, that Allah may send down His wrath and punishment upon them and they be destroyed and ruined, just as punishment came down upon many such cruel disbelievers of former nations and the earth was cleansed of their existence." In reply to this request the Prophet ﷺ said that Allah did not send me to curse and invoke evil; rather I have been sent as a mercy for all the worlds — that is, my distinguishing attribute is mercy, and it does not befit me to invoke evil, even though the people of polytheism are exceedingly active in their enmity toward me; the purpose and aim of my mission is that I should strive to bring people close to Allah's mercy. Then the Prophet's ﷺ day-and-night call to the religion, and a special love and affection for his community — such as is found within no other human being — transformed the very nature of those Arabs.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ holds the rank of "mercy to the worlds": he ﷺ was always of use to others and was engaged day and night in worship; he always forgave the faults of others. His ﷺ excellent example is the best model for the Muslims; therefore we should walk upon the path he ﷺ showed and keep away from the deeds he ﷺ forbade.
