English translation
Abdullah ibn Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that a man came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) (and expressed his desire to take part in jihad for the sake of Allah's pleasure and to earn reward) and said, “I wish to go for jihad.” The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) asked, “Are your parents alive?” He said, “Yes, they are alive.” The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “Then perform jihad by serving them.”
In the Qur'an and the ahadith very great emphasis has been laid on treating parents well; among the rights of people, the greatest right is that of the parents. In several places in the Noble Qur'an, Allah, along with the command to affirm His oneness and to worship Him, has enjoined kindness to parents — which makes it fully clear that only the one who understands and fulfils the demands of obedience and service to the “lesser lordship” (that is, the parents) can properly understand and fulfil the demands of the “greater Lordship” (that is, the worship of Allah). Whoever is unable to grasp that his existence in the world is the result of the closeness of his parents and the fruit of their upbringing and their utmost kindness and compassion — and that he must therefore neither be negligent in serving them nor disobey them — will surely also fall short in understanding the Creator of the universe and in fulfilling the demands of His oneness and worship.
One should treat one's parents well and regard the ability to do so as good fortune in both worlds. After Allah, the greatest right upon a person is that of the parents. Gauge the importance and magnitude of the parents' right from the fact that Allah, Blessed and Exalted, has in the Holy Qur'an mentioned the right of parents alongside His own right in place after place, and has enjoined gratitude to parents together with gratitude to Himself: “And worship Allah and associate none with Him, and be good to parents.” (An-Nisa 36)
From this blessed hadith it is learnt that if the parents are in need of service, then — as long as jihad has not become an individual obligation (fard ayn) — remaining occupied in their service is even better than going out for jihad. And Muslims commonly know the incident that Uways al-Qarni (may Allah be pleased with him) was a resident of Yemen and wished to come to visit the Prophet (peace be upon him), but since his mother was in need of his service, the Prophet (peace be upon him) forbade him to come to him and commanded him to serve his mother; so he was unable to visit the Prophet (peace be upon him), yet on account of serving his mother Allah granted him such a station that even great Companions would have him supplicate for them. When he came to Madinah during the era of Umar al-Faruq (may Allah be pleased with him), Umar al-Faruq (may Allah be pleased with him) went with great eagerness to meet him and to seek his supplication.
Treating parents well in ordinary circumstances is a deed that involves no great toil or hardship, because every person naturally loves his parents, so the heart is of itself inclined to serve and treat them well; on the other hand, out of the compassion that parents have for their children, they themselves do not like to take from their children any task that would be too difficult for them, but are pleased even with a small service and give their blessings. Moreover, Allah has made this deed so easy that, according to one hadith, even to look once at one's parents with a look of love equals in reward the reward of an accepted (supererogatory) hajj. In short, by loving his parents and, through obeying and serving them, a person can amass in his record of deeds an immense store of magnificent good works.
But here another important point should be understood: that jihad and the service of the religion is not the work only of those whose parents are no longer alive; among the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them all) who fought jihad alongside the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), a large number were those whose parents were alive. Everyone should decide for himself in the light of his own circumstances.
