English translation
It is narrated from Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that one day, after the Fajr prayer, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Bilāl (may Allah be pleased with him): "Tell me which of your Islamic deeds you hope will bring you the most goodness and reward, for I heard the sound of your sandals ahead of me in Paradise (that is, at night I saw in a dream that I was walking about in Paradise and heard the footfall of your steps ahead of me, and I wish to know by the blessing of which of your deeds this is; so tell me that deed of yours from which you hope for the most reward and mercy)." Bilāl (may Allah be pleased with him) replied that the deed he hoped most from was that whenever, by night or day, he performed ablution, he would always offer prayer with that ablution — whatever prayer Allah enabled him to offer at that time. (Bukhari and Muslim)

When a person wakes from sleep, or finishes attending to his needs, and then performs a bath or ablution, he experiences a special kind of delight and a peculiar sort of happiness. In the terminology of the Sharia this very state is called purity, and the absence of this state is called ḥadath. There is such a deep connection between body and soul that there is no example of it; whatever state comes over one of them, the other is naturally and inevitably affected. From the cleanliness and purity of the body the soul too gains refinement, delight, and freshness. This is why the Sharia has made purity a requirement for all the important spiritual acts — prayer, recitation, and circumambulation — so that when body and soul both present themselves in the court of the Holy Lord and share in the blessed, spiritual gathering of the angels, they may do so with delight and with cleanliness and purity.

Allah Almighty announced the obligation of ablution in this blessed verse of the Glorious Qur'an: "O you who believe! When you rise for prayer, wash your faces and your hands up to the elbows, and wipe your heads, and wash your feet up to the ankles." (Al-Ma'idah 6)

The report the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave in this hadith — of hearing the footfall of Bilāl's steps or the sound of his sandals in Paradise — was something the Master of both worlds ﷺ witnessed from the unseen, whether in sleep or while awake; or perhaps the Messenger of Allah ﷺ heard the footfall of Bilāl's steps or the sound of his sandals ahead of him in Paradise on the Night of Ascension (Miʿrāj).

Bilāl (may Allah be pleased with him) walking ahead of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ (as the Prophet ﷺ heard the sound of his shoes) was in the same sense in which a servant walks ahead of his master. The spirit of this hadith and its special message is that a person should make it a habit that, whenever he performs ablution, he should — as he is able — certainly offer some prayer with it, whether obligatory, Sunnah, or voluntary.

In another narration it is stated that whoever performs ablution and does it well, and then prays two rakʿahs in such a way that both his face and his heart are turned towards Allah, Paradise becomes assured for him. (From Muslim, Abū Dāwūd, and Nasā'ī)

Perform ablution with full composure and care, and if it is not possible at all times, try to remain in a state of ablution as much as possible. Praying two rakʿahs after ablution takes two minutes; but reflect on how immense the reward of this two- or three-minute deed is, so it should certainly be observed. If there is no obligatory prayer due immediately after ablution, then if one forms the intention of Taḥiyyat al-Wuḍū even within an obligatory or Sunnah prayer, it is hoped — by the perfect mercy of Allah Almighty — that, God willing, the reward of Taḥiyyat al-Wuḍū will be attained through that intention as well.
