English translation
It is narrated from Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said that Allah Almighty says: "Whoever shows enmity to a friend (walī) of Mine, I declare war against him. And of the things through which My servant draws near to Me, the most beloved to Me is that which I have made obligatory upon him. My servant continues to draw near to Me through voluntary (nawāfil) acts until I love him; and when I love him I become his ear with which he hears, his eye with which he sees, his hand with which he grasps, and his foot with which he walks. If he asks Me, I will surely give him, and if he seeks My refuge, I will surely grant it to him. I do not hesitate over anything I do as much as I hesitate over taking the soul of My believing servant: he dislikes death and I dislike causing him displeasure, yet death is inevitable for him." (Bukhārī)
From this hadith one can well judge the importance of voluntary (nawāfil) acts in a believer's life. Although the obligatory duties (farāʾiḍ) hold the highest rank in the religion — and so it is the obligations that first deserve our attention — the voluntary acts are a sign that the servant does not regard obedience and servitude as an unwelcome burden upon himself; rather he wishes to be ever more active in the obedience of Allah. In this way he becomes deserving of His special favour, and Allah begins to love him. And a clear sign of Allah's love is that a person's limbs become subject to the will of his Lord, so that he becomes a manifestation of divine character — such a person that seeing him reminds one of Allah.
The importance of voluntary worship can also be gauged from the report that on the Day of Resurrection the first of a servant's deeds to be reckoned will be the prayer: if it is found sound, the person will be successful; and if it is not sound, he will be in loss. If there is any shortfall in his obligatory prayers, Allah Almighty will say to the angels, "See, does My servant have any voluntary deeds?" — and so it will be with all his other deeds.
