English translation
It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Part of the goodness and beauty of a person's Islam is that he abandons that which is of no benefit or necessity to him."
In reality Islam beautifies our lives and adorns them with beauty, grace and purity. It is entirely in keeping with the excellence of Islam that a person keep away from futile and pointless kinds of activities and spend his time in the best and most pleasing works. If someone wastes his time in pointless activities, it means that either he is wholly unacquainted with Islam or has not yet fully absorbed it. Islam provides the best use for the hours of a person's life; being heedless of this is utterly contrary to reason, wisdom and faith.
The more complete and better a person's religion and faith, the greater will be the purity, beauty and perfection found in his morals and deeds. When a person abandons futile and pointless matters, by this very act he proves that his religious state is sound. By fulfilling the demands of religion and faith a person in reality fulfils the demands of his own nature. Setting one's Islam right means nothing other than that in this way a person beautifies and improves his life. By staining the beauty of Islam a person stains his own life and deprives himself of beauty and goodness. It is in the obedience and worship of Allah and in adhering to His commands that a person attains true life and a wholesome existence. Man does not live by bread alone, but lives (finds life) by the word that comes from Allah, the Lord of Glory; that is, it is the commands of Allah that grant life to man. This truth has been stated in the Holy Qur'an in these words:
{Is one who was dead and We gave him life and made for him a light by which he walks among the people like one who is in darkness from which he cannot emerge?} (Al-An'am 122)
In this verse faith has been described as life and following the commands of Allah as walking by light; that is, the two are inseparable.
The meaning is that a sign of the goodness and beauty of a person's Islam and of the completeness of his faith is that he avoids and refrains from that which it is not necessary to attend to; that is, not speaking of unnecessary and useless matters and keeping oneself safe from idle and futile pursuits is itself the demand of complete faith and the adornment and beauty of a person's Islam. And whatever a person does attend to should be such a thing as is bound up with the necessities of life in this world and with safety and salvation in the Hereafter; that is, those things which fulfil the needs of life, not those things which relate merely to the pleasure of the self, the indulgence of greed and lust, and the love of the world.
Foremost in abandoning pointless matters is that a person should speak only what is needed. In the blessed hadiths there is abundant mention of remaining silent as much as possible and of guarding the tongue. Remaining more silent means only that a person should hold his tongue back from unnecessary, inappropriate and undesirable talk. Certainly whoever adopts this manner will naturally be one who speaks little and remains silent much. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) had the greatest need of all to speak in this world, for he had to give guidance to the people who would be born until the Day of Resurrection, and he did not fall short in speaking out of that need, telling every matter great and small that needed telling; yet despite this the Companions who saw him described his condition thus: the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to remain silent a great deal. (with reference to Sharh al-Sunnah) In another narration it comes thus: he would speak only that in which he hoped for reward. (with reference to Tabarani)
The upshot is that the things which are necessary in this world and the Hereafter, upon which religious and worldly life depend, and which become a means and cause of Allah's pleasure and approval, are not pointless; apart from these, all other things are pointless, whether those things relate to deed or to word.
