English translation
It is narrated from Hazrat Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "All the hearts of the children of Adam are like a single heart between two of the fingers of the Most Merciful; He turns it whichever way He wills." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) recited this supplication: "O Allah, Turner of hearts, turn our hearts toward Your obedience." (Muslim)
Not only over man's outward being, but over his inner self and the movements and states of his heart too, Allah Almighty has complete control; He turns man's heart whichever way He wills. Unfortunate are those whose hearts are inclined toward sin and rebellion and in whose hearts there is no room for goodness and virtue; and fortunate are those whose hearts are inclined toward the obedience and worship of Allah Almighty. Allah Almighty grants the guidance of His obedience, worship and love to those people who have the desire for it within them. As for those who care nothing for right and wrong, beauty and defect, good and evil, Allah Almighty too pays no heed to such people; He leaves them to their ruin. This supplication — "O Allah, Turner of hearts, turn our hearts toward Your obedience" — is proof that the servant who wishes to walk on the path of obedience and worship, such a person Allah Almighty inevitably grants the ability to walk on the path of His pleasure and good favour.
This is an extremely important supplication, because in it is the prayer for steadfastness upon good. Man's heart lies in the path of the waves of events, and their buffets keep turning it this way and that. If Allah's grace and His help are not present, then at many junctures man's heart can go astray. Therefore in it Allah is asked to keep the heart safe from going astray and from turning toward evil, and to keep it turned only toward Himself; for all the power of turning hearts lies with Allah alone.
Supplication too is a kind of worship, indeed its very spirit and essence, and therefore supplication too should be made from Allah alone. In the Holy Qur'an, Allah Almighty has again and again, at various places, given His servants firm instruction on this matter. At one place He says:
{And in every act of worship keep your direction straight toward Him alone, and call upon Him alone, making your obedience sincere for Him.} (A'raf 29)
That is, the One who accepts prayers is Allah alone, so supplicate to Him. Indeed, in one narration it comes that a person should ask for all his needs from Allah alone, to the extent that if the strap of his sandal breaks he should ask it from Allah, and if he needs salt he should ask that too from Him. (with reference to Tirmidhi)
The meaning is that man should turn to Allah alone even for his smallest need; besides Him there is none who hears prayers and none who fulfils desires. While supplicating, man should tremble at the thought that "I am a helpless pauper, a destitute beggar; if, God forbid, I am turned away from this door, then there is no refuge anywhere for me. I have nothing of my own; whatever I have received, I have received from Allah, and if Allah does not give, there is no other in the world who can give me anything." Allah alone is the Inheritor of everything; with Him alone is the treasure of everything; the servant is merely a pauper and helpless. This is why the divine command is:
{O people, call upon your Lord humbly and secretly; indeed He does not love the transgressors.} (A'raf 55)
The very essence of servitude is that the servant should call upon his Lord with utmost humility and submissiveness, imploring Him, with his heart and mind, his emotions and feelings, and all his limbs bowed before Him, and with need and entreaty dripping from the whole state of his outward and inner being. Not only man's outward, but his inner too is in the grasp of the power of Allah Almighty; He turns our hearts whichever way He wills. One should keep praying to Allah Almighty that He keep our hearts inclined only toward His obedience and worship. Whatever thing man desires within himself, Allah Almighty inclines his heart too in that very direction; it is man's own responsibility what thing he becomes a seeker of in the world.
The supplication before Allah Almighty is that He turn the hearts of the entire Muslim Ummah toward His obedience. Amin.
