English translation
It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Beware of suspicion, for suspicion is the most false of speech; and do not spy on people's affairs, nor be mutually hostile, but be brothers to one another; and let no one send a marriage proposal over the proposal of his brother until he marries or leaves off the proposal." (Bukhari)
This hadith tells us how pleasant the mutual relations of the people of faith ought to be. The ideal society whose construction Islam demands makes it indispensable that the hearts of the members of society be entirely pure toward one another. Among them the feeling of enmity or hatred for one another should never be found; they should not be in search of one another's weaknesses; rather, every person should be the protector of the honour and dignity of his brother.
In the Holy Qur'an, Allah Almighty has addressed the believers in this manner: {O you who believe, avoid much suspicion; indeed, some suspicion is sin. And do not spy on one another.} (Al-Hujurat 12)
This verse too is in reality composed of rulings concerning the mutual rights and manners of social conduct of the Muslims. That is, to hold about people of goodness, righteousness and piety such assumptions as are baseless and amount to accusation and slander falls under the category of suspicion, and in the blessed hadith it has been called the greatest falsehood and one has been strictly enjoined to avoid it.
Along with this, spying too has been forbidden — that one should not lie in wait to discover some flaw or fault so as to defame the person. This is the spying that is forbidden; indeed, in the Hadith it has been commanded that if some flaw or shortcoming of another comes to your knowledge, then conceal it, and do not go about relating it before people, nor search out faults by investigation. Today there is much talk of freedom and liberty. Islam too, by forbidding spying, has recognised man's freedom and liberty — but only so long as he does not openly commit indecency or so long as he is not a cause of harm to others. The West, by teaching absolute freedom, has given people licence for general corruption, whereby all the peace and tranquillity of society has been ruined.
The Master of both worlds (peace be upon him), through his blessed words, has greatly urged avoiding these social ills. Man's felicity and good fortune lie in his keeping an eye on his own faults and remaining engaged in reforming them; and whoever does so will find no leisure to pick out and relate the faults of others. As the poet has said:
When we ourselves were unaware of our own state, we kept looking at the faults and merits of others;
When our gaze fell upon our own evils, then no one in the world remained evil.
The people of faith should do no such deed as would break another's heart or would be contrary to sympathy and well-wishing. In this hadith an example of it is given thus: that if someone has sent a proposal of marriage to a household, then it is in no way proper that another person should send his own proposal after this proposal. Yes, if the girl's family does not accept the proposal, or if the one who sent the proposal of engagement himself withdraws his proposal for some reason, then the other person acquires the right to send a proposal of marriage there.
