English translation
Hazrat Nawwas bin Sam'an (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) about virtue and sin, and he (peace be upon him) said: "Virtue is good character, and sin is that which causes unease in your breast and which you would dislike people to come to know of."

No one can deny the importance that morality holds in human life; history offers no example of any nation in which there was no concept whatsoever of good and evil. Even those who believe in determinism cannot openly claim that, in their view, there is no difference between falsehood and truth, or between honesty and deceit. Who can deny that truthfulness, love of good, and uprightness are among the qualities required of a human being? It can never be possible for the human conscience to regard deceit as better than the fulfilment of covenants, selfishness as better than sacrifice, or malice, envy, oppression and cruelty as better than the spirit of brotherhood and compassion.

Demanding a particular kind of morality from human beings means that we regard them as possessed of will and choice; so where there is no will and choice, the question of morality and character does not arise at all. It is a fact that morality is connected to a person's will and choice; man has been given freedom of will and choice in this world, so he has a moral existence — and this is the very thing that distinguishes him from ordinary animals.

From this blessed hadith it becomes perfectly clear that virtue, in its reality, is nothing different from good character; good character is simply another name for virtue. One whose life is devoid of good character is deprived of all the excellences of virtue. Whatever a person's nature recoils from, whatever his heart is not at peace with, whatever pricks the heart, whatever he himself would not wish others to come to know about — that is sin. Conversely, whatever our nature approves of, whatever brings the heart joy and delight when acted upon, and is exactly in accordance with the command of Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him) — that is virtue.

Virtue and sin are opposites of each other; just as light and darkness cannot exist together, so virtue (good character) and sin can never be combined. One who chooses the path of sin first of all adopts an attitude of disloyalty towards himself; sin is in reality a betrayal that a person commits against his own nature and conscience, whereas virtue is in reality another name for self-awareness, self-respect and the awakening of the soul.

In another narration it comes that a man asked the Prophet (peace be upon him): "What is faith?" He (peace be upon him) said: "When your good deed pleases you and your bad deed distresses you, then you are a believer." He asked: "O Messenger of Allah, then what is sin?" He (peace be upon him) said: "When something creates hesitation in your heart, leave it." (Musnad Ahmad)

That is, just as faith is deeply connected with morality, so likewise morality is connected with the whole of our life and distinguishes it. In a life shaped by the morality of a believer, good deeds are not merely good deeds but are, above all, a source of joy and comfort in a person's life. In such a life, evil and wrongdoing hold the status of something utterly loathsome and detestable. If, through human weakness, a believer commits some error or wrong, his conscience shakes him and all his joy is taken away, and he finds no peace or tranquillity until he makes amends for his mistake — and this is truly good character, which is the essence of a believer.
