English translation
It is narrated from Hazrat Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) told us two ahadith; one of them I have already seen, and I am awaiting the other. He (peace be upon him) told us: "Trustworthiness descended into the depths of people's hearts; then they came to know the Qur'an, then they came to know the Sunnah." And he (peace be upon him) described to us its passing away, saying: "A man will sleep and trustworthiness will be taken from his heart, leaving only a faint trace; then he will sleep again and the rest of it will be removed, leaving a mark like a blister — as when you drop a spark of fire on your foot and it raises a blister that you see swollen outwardly though there is nothing within it. The state will be such that people will trade with one another but scarcely anyone will be seen fulfilling a trust, until it will be said, 'In such-and-such a family there is a trustworthy man,' and it will be said of someone, 'How intelligent, how clever and refined, and how brave he is,' though there will not be a mustard-seed's weight of faith in his heart." (Hudhayfah said:) And a time had passed over us when I did not care with whom I traded, for if he were a Muslim, Islam, and if a Christian, his guardian and warden, would return my due to me; but today I trade only with such-and-such people.

In this blessed hadith the Master of both worlds (peace be upon him) has spoken fundamentally about trustworthiness (amanah). "Trustworthiness descended into the depths of people's hearts" means that trustworthiness is in reality the nature of the heart; it is the true capital of the heart, which is here expressed as amanah, and it is by this that the heart has its worth and value. Allah, the Glorified and Exalted, says in the Holy Qur'an:

﴿We offered the Trust to the heavens, the earth and the mountains, but they refused to bear it and were afraid of it; yet man bore it.﴾ (Al-Ahzab 72)

That is, none among the heavens, the earth and the mountains could be the bearer of this Trust; its bearer was man, who alone was granted the capacity to bear it. It is another matter that a person, despite his capacity, may through rebelliousness fail to use it and prove a traitor. In a hadith qudsi it comes that Allah says: "The heavens and the earth are unable to contain Me, but I am contained in the heart of the believer." (Musnad Ahmad)

This does not mean that the believer's heart encompasses Allah; rather it means bearing — that the heart of the believer is the bearer of secrets of which the heavens and the earth cannot be the bearers. The believer's heart, by virtue of its states and attributes, has attained nearness to Allah; and through this nearness it becomes filled with all those qualities and states that are of fundamental importance in religion — knowledge and understanding, piety and awe, love and steadfastness, and all other qualities are produced within man; man becomes the bearer of that light which makes him worthy of trust and reliance, so that he can neither be disloyal to Allah nor deceive Allah's servants in any way. It has also been said that the Book and the Sunnah have made man aware of this trust and its demands; what has been placed in man's nature is nothing other than that which the Qur'an and Sunnah taught to mankind. This is the first hadith which the narrator heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him); the second hadith concerns the passing away of trustworthiness.

Through his own heedlessness man will be deprived of the wealth of trustworthiness, until even its traces will gradually be erased entirely from his mind and heart; just as an inflated blister contains nothing but foul water, so man will become utterly hollow in terms of character and conduct. Because of the passing away of trustworthiness, people's condition will be that they will deal dishonestly, without hesitation, in trade and other dealings, caring nothing for one another's loss. If even the most refined person is looked at closely, it will be found that there is not a mustard-seed's weight of faith in his heart. Trustworthiness and faith are inseparable; without faith no trustworthiness can be expected.

Then Hazrat Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: a time had passed over us such that when we dealt with someone, even if he were not a Muslim we felt no apprehension of him; nor did anyone need the fear of the grip of his chiefs and superiors to compel him not to cheat me of my due but to pay it in full. Then he says: today, the signs of the passing away of trustworthiness of which the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) had informed us began to appear soon after he (peace be upon him) departed this world, and today we can well observe it.
