Narrated Abu Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Shall I not tell you of the deeds by which Allah wipes away sins and raises ranks?" Those present (the Companions, may Allah be pleased with them) said, "Do tell us, O Messenger of Allah." He ﷺ said, "Performing wudu thoroughly and completely despite discomfort and difficulty, taking many steps to the mosques, and waiting for the next prayer after one prayer — that is the true ribat (guarding the frontier); that is the real ribat."

In this blessed hadith the Messenger of Allah ﷺ encouraged three deeds and said that by performing them sins are forgiven and Allah raises the ranks of His servants. The first is to perform wudu according to the Sunnah — washing each limb three times — even in hard conditions: whether it is a time of severe cold, or water is not available nearby so one has to go far to fetch it. The second is that a person takes many steps towards prayer — that is, even if the mosque is far from home, covering that distance for congregation for the five daily prayers in all kinds of weather and conditions. The third, as the Prophet ﷺ said, is that a servant keeps his heart so attached to prayer that after one prayer he awaits the next — a state found only in one whose heart finds peace and tranquillity in prayer. At the end of the hadith the Prophet ﷺ said: that is the true ribat, that is the real ribat. Ribat means standing guard at the Islamic frontier — meaning these three deeds are such that, by observing them, faith is protected from the assaults of Satan, and these deeds strengthen the frontier of faith.
