English translation
Narrated Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both): The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Beware of narrating from me — except what is authentic, so relate it. But whoever deliberately tells a lie about me, let him take his seat in the Fire."
Lying is in itself a major sin; then to attribute a statement to someone — that he said such-and-such (when in fact he did not say it) — adds still more to the sinfulness. And to fabricate a lie against the noble person of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is sin upon sin, because lying about the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is a far graver crime than lying about other people, and its consequence in this world and the Hereafter is the worst — the reason being that the Sharia is founded upon the sayings of the Prophet ﷺ. Whoever lies about him ﷺ has in effect attributed a lie to Allah, for Allah says: "Muhammad (ﷺ) does not speak of his own desire; rather it is revelation sent down to him, and he speaks in accordance with it." (An-Najm 3-4)
Therefore, the greatest care is required in narrating hadith. To say of something the Prophet ﷺ did not say that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said it is a most grievous sin — and this blessed hadith warns against exactly that. If it is well known among people that a certain statement is a hadith, but there is no certainty of its being a hadith through a verifying scholar or reliable and authenticated books, then it is by no means permissible to relate it as a hadith. Concerning one who deliberately relates a non-hadith as a hadith, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said that such a wrongdoer should make his abode in Hell — that is, let him be ready to enter the Fire.
