English translation
It is narrated from Abu Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Allah says: Whoever goes forth in My path, driven out by nothing but jihad in My path, faith in Me and belief in My messengers, it is My guarantee that I will admit him into Paradise, or return him to the dwelling from which he set out, enriched with reward or spoils. By Him in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad ﷺ, whatever wound anyone receives in the path of Allah, he will come on the Day of Resurrection in that same wounded state to be presented before Allah: its colour the colour of blood, but its scent the scent of musk. By Him in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad ﷺ, were it not a hardship for my Ummah, I would never stay behind from any battle fought in the path of Allah; but I do not have the means to provide them all with the equipment of war, nor do they themselves have such means, and it also grieves the Muslims that I should go out on an expedition while they stay behind. By Him in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad ﷺ, it is my wish that I fight in the path of Allah and be killed, then fight and be killed, then fight and be killed."
Keeping in view the teaching and encouragement of jihad in the Qur'an and Hadith, and reflecting on the blessed life of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, it becomes a hundred per cent clear that these words of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in this blessed hadith — "I would fight in the path of Allah and be killed, then fight and be killed, then fight and be killed" — were not merely to urge the Ummah towards jihad or to explain its virtue; rather, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sincerely wished, from the depths of his heart, to offer his life before his Lord, but Allah, for some special wisdom and purpose, did not fulfil this wish of his ﷺ. Allah says in the Qur'an: "And what is the matter with you that you do not fight in the cause of Allah, and for the deliverance of the oppressed among men, women and little children who cry out: 'Our Lord, deliver us from this town whose people are oppressors, and appoint for us from Yourself a protector, and appoint for us from Yourself a helper'?" (An-Nisa 75). That is, it is necessary for you to fight the disbelievers for two reasons: first, to raise high and make dominant the religion of Allah; and second, to rescue the oppressed Muslims who have fallen victim to the disbelievers' oppression and are hemmed in by them — wherever in the world they may live — for it becomes an obligation upon other Muslims to rise up in jihad for them. Allah has commanded the Muslims to strive against oppression, violence, bloodshed and terrorism, however great the oppressive power may be. Thus one important aim of jihad is to completely eradicate from the world oppression, violence, aggression, bloodshed, plunder, terrorism and lawlessness.
