Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Asceticism (zuhd) in this world — detachment from the world — does not mean making lawful things unlawful upon yourself and wasting your wealth. Rather, asceticism in this world is that you have far greater confidence and trust in what is in Allah’s hand than in what is in your own hands; and that when some unpleasantness or hardship befalls you, the reward of that affliction should be so dear to you that you would wish the affliction to remain.”
This hadith shows that asceticism (zuhd) does not mean that a person forbids himself the blessings of Allah and the comforts He has granted, which He has made permissible for people — such as good food, fine clothing, ease and rest, marriage, and the like. Rather, asceticism is that a person does not rely on the perishable things of this world, but places his faith and trust in the grace and generosity of God, keeping his gaze on the never-ending unseen treasures of Allah. Let him always seek well-being and safety from Allah; yet if, by His command, some affliction or hardship reaches him, let him regard that hardship and affliction as insignificant compared with the reward and recompense that awaits him with God.
