English translation
ʿAbdullah ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “When one of you dies, his abode is presented before him every morning and evening. If he is among the people of Paradise, then (his place) among the places of the people of Paradise (is shown before him morning and evening, and shown to him); and if the one who died is among the people of Hell, then likewise (his place) among the places of the people of Hell (is set before him), and it is said: This is to be your permanent abode — and this will be when Allah raises you to Himself on the Day of Resurrection.” (Bukhari and Muslim)

The Holy Qur'an has expressed the theme of belief in the Hereafter in its eloquent, miraculous style and in the most concise words, thus: “Did you then think that We created you in vain, and that you would not be returned to Us? So exalted is Allah, the True King; there is no god but He, the Lord of the Noble Throne.” (al-Mu'minun 115-116)

That is, regarding Allah — the True King, the One worshipped without partner, and the Lord of the Throne — there is absolutely no room for the notion or supposition that He created human beings aimlessly, in vain and for no purpose; rather He created them for an important purpose, and that purpose is that, living in this world, one should prepare to stand before Allah's court and to attain Allah's special grace and bounty in the life of the Hereafter, which is his final and ultimate destination.

So this few days' worldly life of man is itself a sign and proof that after it there must also be that lasting, everlasting life of the Hereafter of which the Prophets (peace be upon them) and Allah's Books have informed us — otherwise man's coming into this world would be a purposeless game and a fruitless spectacle, and Allah is far above that.

In another place Allah addresses (mankind) thus: “Does man think that he will be left neglected (that is, that he will not be requited with reward or punishment for what he has done)?” (al-Qiyamah 36)

In reality, man's worldly life and his creation here have meaning only when one believes in reward and punishment and accepts the truth that life here is a means of attaining the higher, eternal and everlasting life of the next world, the Hereafter. If this is not accepted and the Hereafter is denied, its inevitable consequence would be to regard the creation of man — such a majestic act of Allah — as purposeless, which is sheer folly and misguidance.

This hadith tells us that after death a person does not cease to exist entirely; his soul remains, with its personal characteristics, and morning and evening his real abode is shown to him. The joy and delight the people of Paradise will feel on seeing the sight of Paradise is hard for us to imagine; likewise we cannot conceive the state of the people of Hell on seeing Hell and the grief and anguish they will suffer.

The Holy Qur'an too supports this hadith, as comes in Surah Ya-Sin: “It was said (to him): Enter Paradise. He said: Would that my people knew how my Lord has forgiven me and placed me among the honoured.” (Ya-Sin 26-27)

And in another place Allah says: “So Allah protected that (believing man) from the evils of what they plotted, and a terrible punishment enveloped the people of Pharaoh — the Fire, before which they are presented morning and evening; and on the Day the Hour is established (it will be said): Admit the people of Pharaoh into the severest punishment.” (al-Mu'min 45-46)

From these verses too it is fully evident that after death man does not cease to exist entirely; rather his present body is taken from him, while his personality remains even after death, and he feels pain and pleasure.

May Allah, by His grace and generosity, include us all among the people of Paradise. Amin!
