English translation
Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says: “When the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was taken on the night journey (to Bayt al-Maqdis and the heavens), he was brought to the Sidrat al-Muntaha. The Sidrat al-Muntaha is in the sixth heaven; moreover, whatever thing is taken up from the earth stops at the Sidrat al-Muntaha and is then raised up without any intermediary or means; likewise, whatever thing is sent down from the highest assembly (mala' al-a'la) to the earth is also taken from this Sidrat al-Muntaha.” Then Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) recited this verse — idh yaghsha al-sidrata ma yaghsha (when that which covered the Lote-tree covered it) — and said that the thing (which covered the Lote-tree) is golden moths. Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) also said that on the Night of Ascension the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was given three things: (1) the obligation of the five prayers was granted; (2) the last verses of Surah al-Baqarah were bestowed; and (3) forgiveness of major sins was granted for that person of the Prophet's Ummah who does not associate anything as a partner with Allah.” (Muslim)

From this hadith it appears that the Sidrat al-Muntaha is in the sixth heaven. But from other reports it is learnt that it is in the seventh heaven, and the researched view is precisely this — that the Sidrat al-Muntaha is in the seventh heaven, and the majority of narrators have reported this.
“It stops at the Sidrat al-Muntaha” — this means that whatever thing goes up from the earth, that is, the deeds of the servants and their souls carried up by the angels, all stops at this very Sidrat al-Muntaha; and since even the angels are not permitted to go beyond it, from here Allah, by His power, raises those things up without the medium of the angels. Likewise, the things that descend from the Holy Court to the earth, such as the divine commands and rulings, all come down from above and stop at the Sidrat al-Muntaha, and the angels appointed there take those things and convey them below. Thus the final limit of the knowledge of creation and of the ascent of the angels is the Sidrat al-Muntaha; even the most nearby angels are not permitted to go upward beyond it. It is only the being of our Seal of the Prophets, the Mercy to the Worlds, Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), who was granted the honour of going beyond the Sidrat al-Muntaha.
On the Night of Ascension the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was given three things. The reality is that the vast treasures of knowledge and action, gnosis and truths, secrets and effusions, and lights and blessings that were bestowed upon him (peace and blessings be upon him) that night are of a limitlessness beyond count and reckoning. These three things are the ones that Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioned, because they hold a special honour and nobility in relation to the Ummah, and on account of their special importance it was also necessary to mention them.
It was on the Night of Ascension that the five daily prayers were made obligatory upon this Ummah. By “the last verses of Surah al-Baqarah were revealed” is meant the last two verses; and the granting of these verses on the Night of Ascension means that Allah granted a warrant for the acceptance of the supplications mentioned in these verses. “Forgiveness of major sins was granted for that person of the Prophet's Ummah who does not associate anything as a partner with Allah” means that on the Night of Ascension a promise was made to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) of the forgiveness of the Ummah — that is, that Allah will, if He wills, forgive even without any punishment, even though a person be a perpetrator of major sins, but on the condition that he has not committed shirk. As Allah says:
“Allah will not forgive that a partner be associated with Him, and besides that He forgives whomever He wills.” (An-Nisa 48)
But from this statement of the hadith one should not understand that a perpetrator of major sins has been given open forgiveness, and that no such believer and monotheist who commits a major sin will have to face any punishment; because the fact that those believers and monotheists who commit major sins will be afflicted with punishment is established from other legal proofs and the consensus of the Ummah. By “forgiveness of major sins” is meant that no believer and monotheist will be kept in Hell forever, however many major sins he may have committed, whereas the polytheists will remain in Hell forever. And Allah knows best.
