English translation
It is narrated from the Mother of the Believers, Lady Aisha the Truthful (may Allah be pleased with her); she said: “I never heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ascribe anyone to anything other than the religion.” (Abu Dawud)
This blessed hadith shows that the thing which holds the highest and most exalted station in life is nothing other than religion (deen); this is why, in every task and every affair, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) kept religion before his eyes and wished that people’s bond should essentially be established with religion. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) always ascribed people to religion; in his life he did not give lineage, wealth, dignity, pomp and worldly things the station that he gave to religion. Whatever supreme station can be attained can be attained only through religion; all other things are secondary and lower in comparison with religion.
These worldly things cannot be the ultimate demand of human insight and human nature; the things of this world are far below the quest of human insight, so how can they be given the ultimate place in life? All the flowers of this earth perish; their fragrance keeps fading; everything here proves transient. Yet man dreams of such a spring as would remain forever; like flowers, the lips and mouths here also wither, and nothing of them remains; all the friendships and loves here are subject to decline, yet man dreams of such a love as would remain forever. No one hears this cry of human restlessness; among lineage, homeland and the other things of the world there is nothing that can heal his grief. For man’s lofty and exalted insight there is nothing but religion that can provide comfort. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) expressed this reality in these words: “This world is worthy of rejection, and so is worthy of rejection all that is within it.” (on the authority of Tirmidhi)
It is religion alone that gave human beings the glad tidings of true life and rest; it is religion alone that informed them of their true Object of worship; it is religion alone that respected the natural demands and requirements of human beings; there is nothing but religion that guarantees that the priceless and lofty feelings arising in people’s hearts will not be wasted. It is religion alone that says that not only people’s good deeds but also the finest states of their hearts hold worth and value, and they cannot go without result. It is religion alone that gives correct guidance in every sphere of life and teaches us the correct way of living; it places the known and recognised values of life in their proper station within one complete system of life.
Now we ourselves can understand what other thing there could be, besides religion, whose regard is most necessary in life. By becoming indifferent to religion, or by removing it from its lofty station, man falls into self-abasement, even if he is not aware of it — and this we can all easily observe.
Here a few such narrations are presented from which it can be gauged how the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) always gave religion precedence: “The best of Allah’s servants are those who, when seen, cause Allah to be remembered.” (on the authority of Musnad Ahmad and Bayhaqi) “Our Guardian is only Allah, and our beloved is the righteous, pious believer.” (on the authority of Muslim) “He is not one of us who calls to tribal partisanship, nor is he one of us who fights on the basis of partisanship, nor is he one of us who dies upon partisanship.” (on the authority of Abu Dawud) — Partisanship (asabiyyah) is that conduct in which, instead of making truth, justice and religion the basis, a person makes tribe, race and other such things the decisive basis.
Then see that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) declared the best of places to be the mosques; the best of words in his sight are those from which Allah’s Oneness and greatness are made manifest. When he gave anyone a title it was not “Lion of Arabia” or “Chief of Arabia,” rather the titles were religious ones — Sayfullah (Sword of Allah), Siddiq and Faruq and the like are titles connected with religion. For people he preferred those very names from which a servant’s servanthood is expressed. He liked that manner of sitting and rising in which, instead of pride and arrogance, the glimpse of servanthood and worship is found. These few examples are enough to understand what the pivot and centre of the Noble Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) life was. Just as an artist’s eye is always in search of the outward beauty and excellence in everything, far more than that, he kept before his eyes the religious aspect of everything — which is in truth the aspect of its real beauty and perfection. To always keep religion in view in everything is the true appreciation of life and its provisions. How many of us are there who have adopted this important sunnah of the Master of both worlds (peace and blessings be upon him)? This question arises again and again in the mind and leaves one sorrowful!
