English translation
It is narrated from Abu Musa al-Ash’ari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Allah looks down (upon all His creation) on the night of the middle of Sha’ban and forgives all His creation except a polytheist (mushrik) or one who harbours rancour (mushahin).”

(Narrated from Abu Musa al-Ash’ari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Allah the Exalted turns His attention (towards all His creation) on the night of the middle of Sha’ban and forgives all His creation, except the person who is caught in polytheism and the one who harbours rancour (against a brother).”) (Sunan al-Tirmidhi, Book of Fasting, Chapter on what has been narrated about the night of the middle of Sha’ban, hadith no. 740 — Ibn Majah, Book of Establishing the Prayer and the Sunnah therein, Chapter on what has been narrated about the night of the middle of Sha’ban, hadith no. 1380)

In the religion of Islam certain days and nights hold importance. But their religious importance, and their specification and explanation, have reached us from the blessed tongue of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). No personality of the community, however great, has the right to appoint any religious festival within Islam, nor to declare any day or night or time sacred on his own and celebrate it or command its celebration.
Shab-e-Baraat is generally regarded as a festival of the Muslims; certain rites and supererogatory prayers have been fixed for it which are strictly adhered to, though they have no basis in the Qur’an, nor in the hadith, nor is there any trace of them in the era of the Companions, nor did any of the pious predecessors of the early period declare it a festival of Islam. The one narration that comes to light regarding this night is this: once Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) did not find the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on his bed and went out to search for him; searching, she reached near the graveyard of Baqi and found him present there. On asking the reason, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said that on this night Allah turns His attention towards the lowest heaven and forgives the sins of people to the number of the hairs of the goats of the tribe of Kalb. (on the authority of Tirmidhi) Thus it emerges that worshipping on this night and praying to Allah for forgiveness is a good act, which, if people do individually, they will earn reward. Beyond this, nothing is established from these narrations that would lead one to think that the fourteenth date or the fifteenth night has been declared a festival (Eid) in Islam, or that any special individual or collective act of worship has been prescribed. Neither is cooking halwa on this night a part of the religion, nor is squandering wealth through illuminations and fireworks a part of the religion. This practice is not established from the blessed sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), nor the way of the Rightly-Guided Caliphs, nor the Successors (Tabi’in) and their Successors. Therefore, to regard these as part of the Shariah is an innovation (bid’ah), and every innovation is misguidance, and the end of every misguidance is the Fire of Hell.
Islam is not a religion of customs and festivals at all. Rather, it is to save man from the shackles of customs and from the wasting of time, effort and wealth in amusement and futile pursuits, and to draw his attention towards the solid realities of life, and it wishes to occupy man in those works that are a means of welfare in this world and the Hereafter. It is entirely impossible for the nature of such a religion to set aside one day in the year for cooking halwa and letting off fireworks and tell man: keep on wasting, permanently every year, some precious hours of your life and much of the money earned by your labour.
From this blessed hadith it is well understood that on this night two kinds of people remain deprived of Allah’s general forgiveness and mercy: one is the polytheist who associates any creature as a partner in the worship and servitude of Allah; the other is one who harbours enmity towards others. On account of his humanness, man often becomes heedless of the distinction between right and wrong and neglects the right of another that falls upon him. The teaching of the Shariah is that if, over someone’s remark, some discord arises between two brothers, then each person should honestly reflect on his own state, and whoever is in the wrong should acknowledge his mistake, remove it, and himself step forward to make peace; and the one who best fulfils the demand of faith is he who first steps forward to offer reconciliation and clearing-up, even if the fault be the other’s. And Allah knows best!
