Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates, saying: I myself heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Indeed this Qur'an was revealed with sorrow; so when you recite it, weep, and if weeping does not come to you then feign the form of weeping, and chant it melodiously (i.e. recite it with a beautiful voice and with tenderness). Whoever does not chant the Qur'an melodiously is not of us."

This noble hadith tells us that the revelation of the Qur'an is no ordinary event towards which no special attention need be paid. The Qur'an came down so that it might grant that pain and grief which is the best treasure of life, whose presence is known by weeping and tears; without it a person's heedlessness is not removed. Merriment and carefreeness are a sign that a person's gaze extends only to the outward world and that he has not yet come to know the higher reality — a reality which may be hard to express in words, but this much can be said with certainty: that its sign is not the pursuit of pleasure but pain. The higher realities are those which, rather than making a person free of grief, produce pain in the heart and grant deep awareness. If anything can ever bear deep consciousness, it is pain alone. Indeed, the truth is that even deep joy is not traced in cellars; if anything can give news of it, it is only the drops of tears. Where there is true and deep joy, there will be tears, not loud laughter. From this one can easily reach the conclusion that even true joy falls to the share of those very people who carry the burden of pain and grief. Those who regard the revelation of the Qur'an as an ordinary event do not realise that the Qur'an wishes to see us in a particular state — that state is not carefreeness but pain and feeling. And the reason is this: the one who has pain in his heart seeks that thing which suits his pain.

That is, he does not wish to erase the pain, but rather what he seeks is that which agrees with the pain; and the thing that agrees with the pain does not lessen it but only increases it. This very condition of pain and grief is the guarantee of the heart's life — not merely a guarantee, but it also increases the life of the heart. As comes in a narration: "Do not laugh excessively, for excessive laughter deadens the heart." (Reported from Musnad Ahmad and Tirmidhi) When the heart is deadened by excessive laughter, then the thing that will give life to the heart will necessarily be the opposite of laughter, namely sorrow; but this sorrow is not the grief that a worldly person feels on the occasion of worldly losses — rather this pain is the awareness and recognition of some great reality, indeed the delight of that awareness and recognition. From a materialistic point of view, only that thing can carry worth which can be weighed by the ordinary standard of weighing, i.e. the kilogram. What would it understand of the higher feelings, states and morals? Without deep consciousness, feeling, and reflective grief, life cannot be in harmony with the higher aims, nor without it can life be meaningful and dignified.

In a narration such a person is declared the worst upon whom the Qur'an has no effect. The Prophet (peace be upon him) himself would be overcome with weeping on hearing the Qur'an, and his eyes would fill with tears. In the Qur'an too, mentioning the people of understanding, it is said: "They fall down upon their chins weeping, and this (Qur'an) increases their humility." (Bani Isra'il 107) At another place Allah says: "Do you then wonder at this discourse, and laugh and not weep?" (An-Najm 59-60) The Qur'an did not come down so that you should become carefree; rather it came to grant such a grief for which a thousand joys of the world may be sacrificed. It did not come for laughing and making others laugh; it came so that it might teach you to weep.

At the end of the noble hadith it is said that whoever does not chant the Qur'an — that is, does not recite it with a beautiful voice in a tender and grief-laden tone — is not of us; meaning he has severed his connection with us and is by no means upon our way. He is not prepared for that readiness without which neither does a correct connection with the Qur'an remain, nor can a person fulfil his duties in the workshop of life.

In short, the Qur'an was revealed so that the dead hearts of people might come alive and so that people might become eager and anxious for their destination. For this it is necessary that hearts be safeguarded from the state of hardness and insensitivity; in this regard the tender recitation of the Qur'an is essential, and the rust of hearts can be removed only by this. And whoever is not prepared for this should understand that he is severing his connection from that group which came into existence under the leadership and guidance of the Prophet (peace be upon him), and which is the leading group of all those groups and communities of truth that may come into being in any spot of the earth and in any age.
