English translation
Umm al-Mu'minin Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says that whenever the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sat in a gathering or offered prayer, he would recite a few words (upon rising from it, or after finishing the prayer). (Once) I asked him (peace and blessings be upon him) (what benefit there is in reciting these words). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If good things were said in the gathering before these words, then these words will be a seal upon them (those good deeds) until the Day of Resurrection (that is, by reciting these words those good deeds will be preserved until the Day of Resurrection so that their reward is not lost). And if evil things were said in the gathering before them, then (these words) will become a means of pardon and forgiveness for those evil things. And those words are: Subhanaka Allahumma wa bihamdika, la ilaha illa anta, astaghfiruka wa atubu ilayk (Glory be to You, O Allah, and with Your praise Your purity is declared; there is no god but You; I seek Your forgiveness and turn to You in repentance)." (Nasa'i)
People of every kind in this world — even prophets and saints — are afflicted with hardships and calamities. These righteous servants had their difficulties relieved through supplication. Supplication is a weapon for the fulfilment of one's needs. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) says: Supplication is the weapon of the believer, the pillar of the religion, and the light of the heavens and the earth (al-Hadith).
Calamity is removed through supplication. In one hadith it is stated that only supplication can turn back destiny (Tirmidhi). He also said that Allah becomes displeased with the one who does not ask of Him. Worldly people dislike those who ask of them, but that Generous Being is displeased when one does not ask. This is the door where to ask, to raise the hands, and to bow the head is the very essence of honour and dignity, not of disgrace and humiliation — because that Generous Being Himself says:
{Call upon your Lord humbly and in secret, imploring Him.} (al-A'raf 55)
The meaning of supplication is to seek some of the lesser things from the Most High Being by way of humility. Supplication is the servant's call and his request in the presence of Allah, his plea before Him. It is the greatest blessing for a person that he turns towards his Lord with complete focus and full attention. Supplication includes seeking, praise, love, and turning towards Allah — all of which are the treasure of the people of faith.
When a servant raises his hands in the court of that Master and Creator, presents his needs, and calls upon Him in a state of helplessness and desperation, in this way he negates his own self and acknowledges His greatness and supremacy. Thus supplication is an expression of servitude, an expression of helplessness and neediness, which is itself worship. What is worship other than that the servant bows before Allah's supremacy and majesty and confesses his own humility before Him?
This is why the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) says: Supplication is the essence of worship (Tirmidhi); rather, supplication is worship itself (Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud, Ibn Majah).
The supplication for the expiation of a gathering that has been mentioned above is of the utmost importance, and one should try to memorise it — because our gatherings are, for the most part, filled with useless and worthless talk. Generally in these gatherings only worldly matters are discussed, and the word of Allah and His Messenger is mentioned only rarely. Even among these worldly matters, the usual topic of conversation is politics — the politics of the whole world, most of which is based on hearsay. As if all the problems of the Muslim ummah have their root only in politics. If such people are asked to do some practical work, their life leaves them; the shortage of time gets in the way; countless problems of the present and the future come before them.
May Allah protect us, lest these gatherings become a burden upon our souls on the Day of Resurrection. A person should try to ensure that in every gathering some good words are surely spoken. You yourself should become the one to initiate it; in this way you will become a caller to good, and perhaps a means of someone's reform as well.
