It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "In a person's destiny his share of zina (unlawful sexual conduct) has been written, which he will inevitably commit: the zina of the eyes is looking, the zina of the ears is listening, the zina of the tongue is speaking, the zina of the hand is grasping, the zina of the foot is walking, and the zina of the heart is desire and longing — and the private part confirms all this or belies it." (Muslim)

Islam's system of morals is not limited merely to smiling; rather every good deed and kindness is part of Islam's system of morals. A very great standard of high morality is that a person be not only pure and clean of every kind of bad conduct, but also that he avoid everything whose effects fall upon morals — especially those things connected with the human lineage — as Allah said concerning zina and immorality:

{Do not even go near zina; indeed it is an indecency and an evil way.} (Bani Isra'il 32)

As the above hadith shows, zina is not only of the private part, but also of the hand and foot, the tongue and the eye, and all these are among the causes of zina. For men to take pleasure in gazing at the beauty of unrelated women, and for women to look at unrelated men, is a deadly poison and a cause of trial. Zina begins from here, and this is its first stage. All afflictions arise from wanton looking. The beginning of a fire is but a single spark. Often a wanton glance embeds itself in the heart the way an arrow, leaving the bow, lodges in the target — but the glance is such an arrow that turns back upon the very one who shoots it. Clearly, when a person looks at a beautiful form, he also longs to attain it, which is not possible; and as a result, regret, remorse, and grief and sorrow arise, which strike a fatal blow to a person's capacity for action. This is why the Shari'ah has commanded both men and women to lower the gaze (ghadd al-basar), and has also commanded women to observe the veil. Allah, the Lord of Glory, says:

{(O Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him,) tell the believing men to lower their gaze and guard their private parts; that is a matter of greater purity for them. Indeed Allah is well aware of what they do. And tell the believing women too that they should lower their gaze and guard their private parts, and not display their adornment except what appears thereof; and to draw their veils over their bosoms.} (an-Nur 30-31)

On the night of the Mi'raj, the Prophet also witnessed the treatment that befalls the adulterers, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) described it thus: I saw a well like an oven, whose upper part was narrow and lower part wide; a fire was blazing in it, and the clamour and uproar of people was coming from it. Those people would rise up with the flames, and when the flame subsided they would go back down. These are the adulterous men and women who are burning in that fiery oven (Bukhari). A hadith states that whoever casts a lustful look at an unrelated beautiful woman, molten lead will be poured into his eyes on the Day of Resurrection. This is a proof of the greatness of the pure Shari'ah — that it blocks the path not only of the sin itself but also of the causes that may incite a person to sin. Actual zina is of course unlawful, but its causes too are unlawful — such as the abandonment of the veil, free mixing, wanton looking, kissing and embracing, and so on.

Some, driven by the self and Satan, call the looking at beautiful faces an appreciation of beauty (dhawq-e-jamal). According to them, a beautiful face too, like a beautiful flower, is a manifestation of (divine) power. This claim of theirs is nothing more than a false consolation; otherwise who can claim that upon seeing the beautiful face of the opposite sex the same state arises in a person as arises upon seeing a beautiful flower? And when there is a difference between the two kinds of states, then what sort of reason says that this appreciation of beauty too should have the same freedom that the other appreciation of beauty has?
