English translation
Sufyan al-Thaqafi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates; he says: I said to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): “O Messenger of Allah, tell me something about Islam such that afterwards I will not need to ask anyone anything concerning it.” In one narration these words come: so that I would not need to ask anyone other than him (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Say: I have believed in Allah — and then remain firm upon that.”
Continuous striving and effort in the doing of some work is what is called istiqamah (steadfastness). And without steadfastness no work of religion or of the world can be accomplished. And that for every work which is held to be true, hardships be borne in order to attain it properly, yet one does not depart from what is right nor turn one's face away from it — that is what is called steadfastness. Steadfastness is the sole means of success in one's purpose. Those who have no steadfastness cannot succeed in their purpose. In the Holy Qur'an too, the importance of steadfastness and the emphasis upon it have come. The Lord of Glory declares:
“So call towards Him and remain firm upon it, as you have been commanded, and do not follow the desires of those unworthy ones.” (al-Shura – 15)
For those who remain steadfast and firm-footed in religion there is the glad tidings that:
“Indeed those who said, 'Our Lord is Allah,' and then remained firm upon it — no fear shall be upon them, nor shall they grieve.” (al-Ahqaf – 13)
It is related from Hazrat Junayd al-Baghdadi (may Allah have mercy on him): al-istiqamatu fawqa karamah — that is, steadfastness is greater than every miracle. And in reality it is so: that a person accepts Allah as his Lord and then becomes so firm-footed upon it that no worldly greed, no hardship, no calamity can move him from the truth or turn him from his belief and his conviction — this is steadfastness. And this is so great a wonder that no wonder can be greater than it. This indeed is a wonder: a deed which ordinary people cannot perform; and to keep on doing some deed with regularity and steadfastness is not within every person's power. And this is what is demanded of a Muslim, and in this lies his test, by which the difference between the truthful and the false becomes plain. In Surah al-'Ankabut, verses 2 and 3, Allah Almighty declares:
“Do people imagine that merely because of their saying, 'We have believed,' We shall leave them without putting them to the test? We tested thoroughly those who came before them too. Allah Almighty will surely know those who are truthful (in their faith), and He will surely know the liars too.”
Then this testing comes in various ways: sometimes upon one's own life, sometimes upon the life of a loved one, sometimes upon one's own wealth, sometimes upon the wealth of someone dear. Allah Almighty declares:
“And We shall surely test you with some fear and hunger and loss of wealth and lives and fruits; so give glad tidings (of Allah's good pleasure) to those who are patient.” (al-Baqarah 155)
To set one's foot in this arena of love's martyrdom —
people think that being a Muslim is easy.
So this very pleasure of the Lord, this good pleasure of the Truth, is the centre and pivot of all a Muslim's longings. This very passion for the Lord's pleasure spurs him to action and makes him ready for every kind of sacrifice. Then he reaches that station where —
Desert and river are cleft in two by their footfall;
mountains shrink to a mustard seed before their awe.
