English translation
Abu Musa al-Ash‘ari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “The use of gold and of silken cloth is lawful for the women of my ummah and unlawful for its men.”
Islam has, on the one hand, generally declared adornment permissible — indeed desirable — and has condemned making it unlawful, as Allah Almighty says:
“Say: Who has forbidden the adornment of Allah which He has produced for His servants, and the wholesome things of sustenance?” (Al-A‘raf 32)
Yet along with this it has forbidden two items of adornment to men while declaring them lawful for women, namely wearing gold jewellery and pure silk. Another narration states that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) took silk in his right hand and gold in his left and said that both of these are unlawful for the men of my ummah (reported by Abu Dawud, Nasa’i, Musnad Ahmad, Ibn Majah and Ibn Hibban).
The reasons for which silk and gold have been forbidden to men are extremely important moral and educative considerations. Islam, which is a religion of struggle and strength, wishes to safeguard manliness against those things which produce weakness, slackness and decline in character. Allah Almighty has given man a physical constitution different from that of woman. It is therefore in no way fitting that he should begin to compete with women and vie with them in adorning himself with jewellery and wearing beautiful clothing. Besides this, collective considerations also lie behind this prohibition. The system of continuous struggle in life which Islam has laid down against luxury also demands the prohibition of gold and silk. In the view of the Qur’an, the love of luxury is that moral decline which has dragged so many nations to destruction. This love of luxury is a manifestation of collective injustice, because a small class of wealthy people enjoys itself by exploiting a great number of the needy and the lower classes. This class has always been the opponent of truth, goodness and reform. The Qur’an says:
“And when We intend to destroy a town, We command its affluent people, and they begin to commit disobedience in it; then the decree of punishment fastens upon that town and We destroy it utterly.” (Al-Isra 16)
In another place the Holy Qur’an states: “Never did We send a warner to a town but that its luxury-loving people said: We reject the message you have brought.” (Saba 34)
In the light of these declarations of the Holy Qur’an, the Noble Prophet (peace be upon him) declared all manifestations of luxury in the life of a Muslim to be undesirable, and some things outright unlawful. Just as he made gold and silk unlawful for men, so he declared the use of gold and silver vessels unlawful for both men and women.
Women have been kept apart from this ruling, because this is both a concession in favour of woman and a requirement of femininity itself. At the same time it accords exactly with their adornment-loving nature — provided that the aim is not to attract towards anything contrary to the Shari‘ah. One narration states that a woman who passes by people wearing perfume so that its fragrance reaches them is an adulteress, and every immoral glance is adultery (reported by Nasa’i, Ibn Khuzaymah and Ibn Hibban).
And warning women, Allah Almighty says: “And let them not strike their feet hard so as to make known the adornment they have concealed.” (An-Nur 31)
Therefore, in the light of the Holy Qur’an and the blessed ahadith, it is in no way permissible for men to use silk and gold. Women, however, have complete permission for it, but the intention must not be to display it to a non-mahram; otherwise such women fall into that group against which a severe warning has come in the blessed hadith. May Allah Almighty grant the Muslim ummah the ability to act fully upon what is lawful and unlawful. Amin!
