خودکشی حرام ہے
حضرت ابو ہریرہ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ سے روایت ہے کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے ارشاد فرمایا: ''جس کسی نے پہاڑ سے گر کر خودکشی کر لی وہ جہنم کی آگ میں ہمیشہ ہمیشہ کے لیے اسی طرح گرتا رہے گا۔ جس کسی نے زہر پی کر خودکشی کر لی زہر اس کے ہاتھ میں ہوگا اور جہنم کی آگ میں وہ اسے ہمیشہ ہمیشہ پیتا رہے گا اور جس نے دھار والی چیز مار کر خودکشی کر لی تو وہ دھار دار آلہ اس کے ہاتھ میں ہوگا جس سے وہ جہنم کی آگ میں مسلسل اپنا پیٹ چاک کرتا رہے گا۔'' (بخاری)
انسان اپنی زندگی کا آپ مالک نہیں ہے کیونکہ وہ زندگی کے ایک خلیہ کا بھی خالق نہیں ہے۔ زندگی تو اللہ رب العزت کی امانت ہے انسان ان کی مدد سے نیکی کی راہ میں اپنی جان قربان تو کر سکتا ہے لیکن اس کو ضائع نہیں کر سکتا اور جو شخص یہ بد دیانتی کرتا ہے وہ اللہ تعالیٰ کی نظر میں بڑا باغی اور مجرم ہے۔ اسی لیے انسان سے سرزد ہونے والے جرائم میں سب سے سنگین اور گھناؤنا جرم خودکشی ہے۔ جس نے خودکشی کی خواہ کسی ذریعہ سے کی ہو اس نے ایک نفس کو قتل کر دیا جس کا ناحق قتل اللہ تعالیٰ نے حرام ٹھہرایا ہے۔ جیسا کہ فرمان باری تعالیٰ ہے:
﴿اور اپنے آپ کو قتل نہ کرو، یقین مانو کہ اللہ تمہارے اوپر نہایت مہربان ہے۔﴾ (النساء۔۲۹)
اسلام چاہتا ہے کہ مسلمان مشکلات کا مقابلہ مضبوط قوت ارادی کے ساتھ کرے، کسی مصیبت سے گھبرا کر یا کسی امید کے پوری نہ ہونے کی بنا پر زندگی سے فرار کی راہ اختیار کرنا ہرگز جائز نہیں ہے۔ مومن مجاہدہ کے لیے پیدا ہوا ہے بیٹھ رہنے کے لیے نہیں اور اس کی تخلیق کشمکش کے لیے ہوئی ہے فرار کے لیے نہیں۔ اس کا ایمان اور اس کا اخلاق کارگاہِ حیات سے فرار اختیار کرنے سے اسے روکتا ہے۔ اس کے پاس ایسا ہتھیار ہے جو کبھی خراب نہیں ہوتا اور ایسا ذخیرہ ہے جو کبھی ختم نہیں ہوتا وہ ہتھیار ایمان محکم ہے اور وہ ذخیرہ اخلاق کی پختگی ہے۔
جو شخص اس قبیح جرم کا مرتکب ہو اس کو رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے سخت وعید فرمائی ہے کہ وہ اللہ تعالیٰ کی رحمت سے محروم اور اس کے غضب کا مستحق ہوگا۔ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کا فرمان ہے کہ: ''تم سے پہلے لوگوں میں ایک شخص تھا۔ اسے زخم لاحق ہوا تو وہ گھبرا گیا اس نے (تنگ آ کر) خودکشی کر لی۔ اللہ تعالیٰ نے ارشاد فرمایا میرے بندے نے اپنی جان کے خاتمے کے لیے مجھ سے آگے نکلنے کی کوشش کی۔ لہٰذا میں نے اس پر جنت حرام کر دی۔'' (بحوالہ بخاری)۔ یہ مثال ہے ایسے شخص کی جو زخم کی تاب نہ لا کر خودکشی کر بیٹھا اور جنت کو اپنے اوپر حرام کر لیا تو جو لوگ کاروبار میں تھوڑے سے نقصان۔ امتحان میں ناکام ہو جانے یا کسی اور دنیاوی مسئلے کی بناء پر خودکشی کر بیٹھتے ہیں ان کا معاملہ کس قدر شدید ہوگا۔ اور ایسے ہی سزا پانے والوں کے متعلق ارشاد باری تعالیٰ ہے۔
﴿جہاں پھر نہ وہ مرے گا نہ جیئے گا (بلکہ حالت نزاع میں پڑا رہے گا)۔﴾ (الاعلیٰ۱۳)
ایک روایت میں اس طرح آتا ہے کہ نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کی خدمت میں ایک جنازہ لایا گیا جس نے تیز ہتھیار سے اپنے آپ کو قتل کر لیا تھا۔ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے اس کی نماز جنازہ نہیں پڑھائی، (بحوالہ مسلم)۔
یہاں ہر مسلمان کو یہ ضرور سوچنا چاہیے کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے منافقوں کے سردار عبداللہ بن ابی کی نماز جنازہ حضرت عمر رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ کے بار بار نہ پڑھانے کی درخواست کے باوجود پڑھائی۔ جبکہ صحابہ کرام کے اصرار کرنے کے باوجود خودکشی کرنے والے کی نماز جنازہ پڑھانے سے انکار فرمایا۔ اس سے معلوم ہوتا ہے کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے نزدیک خودکشی کس قدر گھناؤنا جرم اور کتنا قبیح عمل ہے۔ رحمت للعالمین صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے ان ارشادات کے ہوتے ہوئے آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم پر ایمان لانے والے آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کا کلمہ پڑھنے والے آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کو صادق و امین تسلیم کرنے والے بلکہ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سے عشق و محبت کے دعوے داروں کے لیے اس قبیح جرم کا تصور کرنا بھی ناممکن ہے۔ لیکن افسوس! آج مسلمان قوم میں ایک تعداد ایمان کی کمزوری اور اعمال کی شامت کی وجہ سے اس خطرناک مرض کا شکار ہوتی جا رہی ہے۔ اگر آپ غور کریں تو اس کا بنیادی سبب وہ بڑھی ہوئی خواہشات میں جن کی تکمیل نہ ہونے پر انسان کو افسردگی اور ڈپریشن کا مرض لاحق ہو جاتا ہے جو بالآخر خودکشی پر ختم ہوتا ہے۔ اللہ تعالیٰ ہر مسلمان کو اس کے ارتکاب سے محفوظ فرمائے، آمین یا رب العالمین!

English translation
Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Whoever kills himself by throwing himself down from a mountain will go on falling in that same way in the Fire of Hell for ever and ever. Whoever kills himself by drinking poison, the poison will be in his hand and he will go on drinking it for ever and ever in the Fire of Hell. And whoever kills himself by striking himself with a sharp object, that sharp instrument will be in his hand and with it he will go on tearing open his own belly continually in the Fire of Hell.”
A human being is not himself the owner of his life, because he is not even the creator of a single cell of life. Life is a trust from Allah, the Lord of Glory. With its help a person may sacrifice his life in the path of goodness, but he may not destroy it; and whoever commits this breach of trust is, in the sight of Allah Almighty, a great rebel and criminal. For this reason, of all the crimes committed by man, suicide is the gravest and most repugnant. Whoever commits suicide, by whatever means he does it, has killed a soul whose unlawful killing Allah Almighty has forbidden. As Allah Almighty says:
“And do not kill yourselves; be assured that Allah is most merciful towards you.” (An-Nisa 29)
Islam desires that a Muslim should face difficulties with firm strength of will. To take the path of escape from life out of panic at some calamity, or because some hope has not been fulfilled, is never permissible. The believer has been created for striving, not for sitting idle, and his creation is for struggle, not for flight. His faith and his moral character stop him from fleeing the workshop of life. He possesses a weapon that never becomes defective and a store that is never exhausted: that weapon is firm faith, and that store is strength of character.
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) issued a severe warning against whoever commits this vile crime — that he will be deprived of the mercy of Allah Almighty and deserving of His wrath. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Among the people before you there was a man. He suffered a wound and became distressed, and (out of desperation) he killed himself. Allah Almighty declared: My servant tried to get ahead of Me in ending his own life; therefore I have forbidden Paradise to him.” (Reported in Bukhari.) This is the example of a man who, unable to bear a wound, killed himself and made Paradise unlawful for himself. How much graver, then, will be the case of those who kill themselves over a small loss in business, over failing an examination, or on account of some other worldly problem! And concerning those who receive such punishment Allah Almighty says:
“Wherein he will neither die nor live (but will remain in the throes of death).” (Al-A‘la 13)
One narration states that a funeral was brought before the Noble Prophet (peace be upon him) of a man who had killed himself with a sharp weapon. The Prophet (peace be upon him) did not lead his funeral prayer (reported in Muslim).
Here every Muslim ought to reflect that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) led the funeral prayer of Abdullah bin Ubayy, the chief of the hypocrites, despite the repeated request of Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that he should not do so; whereas, despite the insistence of the noble Companions, he refused to lead the funeral prayer of the one who had committed suicide. From this it is known how repugnant a crime and how vile an act suicide is in the sight of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). With these declarations of the Mercy to the Worlds (peace be upon him) before them, it should be impossible for those who believe in him, who recite his kalimah, who accept him as truthful and trustworthy — indeed for those who claim love and devotion for him — even to conceive of this vile crime. But alas! Today a number of people among the Muslim nation are falling victim to this dangerous disease because of weakness of faith and the evil consequence of their deeds. If you reflect, its basic cause lies in those inflated desires which, when they are not fulfilled, bring upon a person the illness of dejection and depression, and which finally end in suicide. May Allah Almighty protect every Muslim from committing it. Amin, O Lord of the Worlds!
