English translation
‘Awf bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said that (on one occasion) the Noble Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم gave judgement in a case between two men (which went against one man and in favour of the other). The man against whom the case was decided rose from the Prophet’s gathering and, as he was leaving, said: “Hasbi Allahu wa ni‘mal wakeel” — that is, my Allah is sufficient for me and He is the best disposer of affairs. On hearing this the Noble Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: Allah Most High censures foolishness and carelessness. It is necessary for you to act with good sense and alertness; and if even then some misfortune befalls you, then say: Hasbi Allahu wa ni‘mal wakeel. (Abu Dawud)
Concerning the background of this hadith the learned scholars say that it appears one man had taken some loan from another and had also repaid that loan, but this foolishness occurred on his part: that at the time of repaying the loan he neither took any receipt from the creditor nor made anyone a witness. In the end the creditor brought a claim against this man in the presence of the Messenger. Since the creditor produced proof of having given the loan, while the debtor had no proof of repayment, the case was decided against him. When that man lost the case and came out of the Prophet’s court, out of grief and regret he said “Hasbi Allahu wa ni‘mal wakeel”, and thereby he hinted that the claimant had wrongfully taken his property and that he had needlessly suffered loss.
At this the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم expressed anger and declared that carelessness, foolishness, negligence and slackness in the affairs of one’s life are no good thing; rather, Allah Most High censures the one who acts so. Then he gave the warning: it is binding upon you to be alert and watchful in your business and your affairs, and to adopt caution and wisdom.
The upshot is that Allah Most High is not pleased with negligence and slackness. The wealth of intellect with which Allah Most High has favoured man demands that His servant adopt wisdom and alertness in all his religious and worldly affairs. Therefore do not, out of a sense of your own helplessness, say “Hasbi Allahu wa ni‘mal wakeel” over the negligence and slackness that has issued from you in this matter; rather resolve for the future that you will never again be negligent and slack in this way and that you will keep caution in view in every case. And when, despite every possible precaution and alertness, no path to the goal comes to hand and all the ways of attaining the goal are closed, then say: Hasbi Allahu wa ni‘mal wakeel.
Islam is through and through the religion of nature. It not only tells a person the ways of success in the Hereafter, but also teaches the best ways of passing worldly life with ease and well-being. In the above hadith the Prophet of mercy صلى الله عليه وسلم has taught an extremely important principle concerning the affairs of life. That principle is this: planning comes before trust in Allah. Whatever problem a person faces, let him carry out with full resolve, determination and diligence those things that lie within his own power. For the solution of the problem let him adopt the best means according to his standing and capacity, make the best plan, and gather the best individual effort; after that let him leave the matter to Allah. If he is ill, let him consult the best doctor his means allow; if it is a matter of business, let him try to develop it through every lawful method; if he is engaged in seeking knowledge, let him arrange the best possible book and the best possible teacher. If, God forbid, he is faced with some lawsuit, let him engage the best lawyer his means allow. In short, let him do nothing on his own part that amounts to negligence or weakness. After that let him supplicate to Allah, and then be patient and grateful over whatever that Master has decreed.
