English translation
It is narrated from ‘Abdullah bin ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “When you meet someone who has performed Hajj, then before he reaches his own home, greet him with salam and shake his hand and ask him to pray for forgiveness, because he is in such a state that the decree of the forgiveness of his sins has already been passed (and so there is particular hope that his supplication will be accepted).” (Musnad Ahmad)

Hajj is obligatory from Allah Almighty, once in a lifetime, upon every Muslim man and woman who has the strength — of body and of means — to travel to it. The obligation of Hajj is a unique distinction of Islam; Allah Almighty made it obligatory for the attainment of a great many purposes. Hajj is without doubt an act of worship of many purposes and many benefits, whose religious and worldly benefits are so numerous that it is not even possible to count them completely. Allah Almighty has expressed this reality in the Holy Qur’an in these words:

“That is, let the people come here and, on coming, see what manner of religious and worldly benefits there are for them in the Hajj.” (The Qur’an)

If we reflect, we shall feel that there remains no aspect of the teachings of Islam whose instruction is not given, directly or indirectly, during the Hajj: the teaching of concord and unity, the teaching of sacrifice and self-denial, the teaching of order and discipline, the teaching of calling to Allah and of struggle, the teaching of single-mindedness and solidarity, the teaching of equality and brotherhood, the teaching of peace and safety, the teaching of the oneness of the community, the teaching of turning to Allah, the teaching of following the Sunnah, and the teaching of the creed of the Oneness of Allah.

Therefore, when a pilgrim returns after Hajj bearing such teachings, he should be welcomed before he reaches his home, and one should also have him supplicate on one’s own behalf. Concerning this it comes in the noble hadith to the extent that: “Those who perform Hajj and ‘Umrah are the delegation of Allah (guests who are going to His court). If they call upon Him, He accepts their supplication, and if they seek forgiveness from Him, He forgives them.” (On the authority of Ibn Majah)

For this reason it was the custom in past times — and still is in some countries and regions — that when the pilgrims returned to their homes, people would go out to receive them; and their purpose was that, since this person’s sins have been forgiven and he has come back cleansed of sins, they should meet him and shake his hand before he becomes involved once again in the affairs of the world. Thus in this noble hadith too the condition of greeting the pilgrim with salam and a handshake before he enters his house has been placed for this reason: that not only is he until then not entangled in the world and occupied with his family, but rather until then he is still upon the path of Allah and is pure and clean of sins; and in this state, since the pilgrim is among those whose supplications are answered, it has been said that you should have him supplicate for forgiveness and pardon on your behalf, so that Allah Almighty may accept it and bestow forgiveness and pardon upon you.

In another narration it comes in this way: that there are five supplications which are not turned back — first, the supplication of the pilgrim, until he returns; second, the supplication of the one who strives in the way of Allah, until he comes back; third, the supplication of the wronged one, until his grievance is redressed; fourth, the supplication of the sick person, until he is restored to health; and fifth, the supplication of a brother for his brother made in his absence. (Al-Hadith)

In the light of all these ahadith, those people to whom Allah Almighty has not given the means for Hajj should at the very least receive the pilgrim and have him supplicate for forgiveness on their behalf. May Allah Almighty grant every Muslim the means for Hajj and the ability to perform it. Ameen.
