English translation
It is narrated from Abu Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), who heard from his father that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: “Whoever affirms the words La ilaha illa Allah and rejects whatever is worshipped besides Allah Almighty, his wealth and his blood become inviolable, and his reckoning (that is, the remaining matter) rests with Allah.”

Every kind of disbelief is the greatest stain upon humanity, but the worst kind of it is shirk — that is, associating anyone else with the being of Allah Almighty, with His attributes, with His worship, and with His bounds and majesty. The Qur'an and the hadith proclaim that the Creator has made the innate nature of every human being pure and clean of every kind of pollution of shirk. The one guilty of soiling it with such filth is either the person himself or his parents. The Lord of the worlds has decreed that in His court every sin and slip is forgivable, but the crime of disbelief and shirk will never be forgivable, and there will be no place for such a person in the Paradise of Allah Almighty. In Surah al-Ma'idah, Allah Almighty says: “Indeed, whoever associates a partner with Allah Almighty, Allah Almighty has forbidden Paradise to him and his abode is the Fire.”

A saying of Hazrat Shaykh 'Abd al-Qadir Jilani (may Allah have mercy on him) is fitting for explaining Islam's conception of shirk. His saying is: “Shirk is not merely the name of idol worship; rather, to follow the desire of one's own self, and to choose anything of this world or the Hereafter alongside Allah, the Lord of Glory, is also shirk. Whatever is other than Allah Almighty is other-than-Allah. So when you turn towards other than Him besides Allah, then indeed you have set up something other than God as a partner to Allah Almighty.”

The real essence of shirk is to make some creature resemble the Creator, or to regard one's own self as resembling the Creator. This resemblance arises on account of those attributes that are counted among the exclusive qualities of the Holy God. For example, one of His attributes is that He is the Possessor of power — that He alone is the owner of benefit and harm, of giving and withholding. Now to accept, or to hold the notion, that this attribute exists in someone else too — that he also has the power to bring benefit or harm, that giving death and life is in his grasp — this is shirk. Likewise, one of Allah's attributes is knowledge. Now if someone supposes that another too, like Allah Almighty, has knowledge of every particle, or is aware of all our circumstances, or has knowledge of things near and far, this too is shirk. Similarly, to associate anyone else in Allah Almighty's attribute of All-Hearing and All-Seeing — for example, to hold the belief that another too hears our words from near and far, or sees our deeds from everywhere — this too is shirk. Likewise, all those acts that fall within the category of worship — such as prostrating to someone, bowing, circumambulating, supplicating to someone, and so on — are all forms of shirk.

The question of tawhid and shirk is so important in the religion of Islam that it cut off at the root every cause in which there was even a fear of the slightest suspicion of disbelief and shirk arising. This may be gauged from that noble hadith narrated in Nasa'i Sharif from Hazrat Ibn 'Abbas: that one day a man said in the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), “Whatever Allah wills and whatever you will.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) at once forbade him and warned him in these words: “You have set me up as a partner to Allah Almighty. So say instead: whatever Allah alone wills.” In one narration it is that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: do not say “whatever Allah wills and so-and-so wills”; rather say “whatever Allah wills, and then whatever so-and-so wills” (Abu Dawud, Ahmad, Nasa'i). So when Islamic monotheism does not tolerate even a merely verbal and literal equating of the name of any creature with the blessed name of Allah Almighty, then how could it ever endure any equality in His attributes and His rights?

The Islamic conception of tawhid is not attained merely by reciting the word of monotheism with the tongue; rather it is attained only when it begins to show in every small and large corner of a person's life, and when the positive and negative aspects of La ilaha and La sharika lahu both become distinctly visible. Where he is a firm believer in Allah's oneness, there too he must be utterly averse to shirk and to all its ways.
