English translation
Narrated by Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Who will take these words from me and then act upon them, or teach them to one who will act upon them?" I — that is, Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) — said: "I will, O Messenger of Allah!" Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) took my hand and told me five things. He (peace be upon him) said: "Keep away from the things that have been declared unlawful, and you will be the most devoted of worshippers. Be content with what Allah has apportioned for you, and you will be the most free of need. Treat your neighbour well, and you will be a believer. Love for people what you love for yourself, and you will be a Muslim. And do not laugh too much, for excessive laughter deadens the heart."

From this blessed hadith we learn that the Prophet (peace be upon him) urged a person both to adopt these things in his own practical life and to teach others to act upon them, so that goodness should not remain confined but spread further and further until the whole of society takes on the colour of goodness. The Prophet (peace be upon him) first asked who would learn these words from him, act upon them, and pass them on to others. When Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) offered himself for this, the Prophet (peace be upon him) took his hand and taught him these things. He adopted this manner of teaching so that the importance of these words would be entirely clear to him and he would give them his full attention.

From this hadith we learn that in order to become a true and perfectly devoted servant it is not enough to regard prayer, fasting and such acts of worship as sufficient; it is also necessary to keep away from forbidden things. How can one who makes no distinction between the lawful and the unlawful in his life be called a truly faithful and obedient servant of Allah? True servanthood is that a servant should fear Allah's displeasure at every moment and in every matter, and should be constantly concerned to please Him.

The second saying makes it clear that true wealth and freedom from need can be attained only when a person is content with what Allah has apportioned. Whatever Allah has decreed for him cannot be devoid of wisdom. Therefore, rather than counting what he has as insufficient and complaining about it, he should be content with it. This makes a person free of need, and his heart attains such openness and expansiveness as cannot be imagined in ordinary circumstances. He is cleansed of all such vices as greed, craving and envy.

The third saying shows that faith is not related to the heart alone; its manifestation in practical life is also required. It is an important demand of faith that our conduct towards our neighbours be good. Neighbourliness is a bond, and to trample on any bond can never be the way of a believer. From the Prophet's fourth saying we learn that a Muslim is one who does not keep different scales, but rather desires for others what he desires for himself. This is also what Islam and justice demand: no one wishes ill for himself, so he should be a well-wisher of others too. If this teaching of the Prophet (peace be upon him) were adopted, we can imagine how many of our mutual quarrels would come to an end.

The Prophet's fifth saying is also of the most fundamental importance. Laughing too much brings heedlessness over the heart, and this delicate organ loses its finest capacities. The heart of a person of faith is extremely sensitive; it feels at all times the majesty and greatness of Allah. This gives a person dignity of character; it brings seriousness, and superficiality does not remain. By no means does this mean that a person should become dry-natured; but avoiding idle amusement and frivolity is essential, because without that a person can never hold to any serious purpose.
