English translation
Narrated by Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him): On the day of the Battle of the Trench we said to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him): "O Messenger of Allah, is there some particular supplication for this critical hour that we may offer before Allah? Our state is such that our hearts are leaping up into our throats out of terror." He (peace be upon him) said: "Yes, say this before Allah: Allahumma-stur 'awratina wa amin raw'atina" — O Allah, cover our failings, and turn our alarm into security and calm. Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Then Allah sent a wind which turned back the faces of the enemy, and by that very wind Allah defeated them.
By "the day of the Trench" is meant the Battle of the Trench, which is also called the Battle of the Confederates (al-Ahzab); a complete surah of the Holy Qur'an bears that same name, Surah al-Ahzab. Among the very hardest days that passed over the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and his noble Companions (may Allah be pleased with them all) were some of the days of the Battle of the Trench, which are mentioned in the Holy Qur'an in these words:
"When the enemy hosts came upon you from above you and from below you, and when the eyes turned aside and the hearts reached the throats in terror, and you began to entertain all kinds of thoughts about Allah — there the believers were sorely tried and shaken with a severe shaking." (Al-Ahzab 33:10-11)
In this battle all the tribes hostile to Islam united and attacked the Muslims, and the Muslims, on the advice of Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him), dug a trench for their defence so that the enemy could not enter Madinah. In this campaign the Arabs spent their entire strength on uprooting the power of the Muslims. The Jews of Khaybar were the real instigators of this war; then the idolatrous tribes of the surrounding country were also brought in alongside them, and by the time they reached Madinah their number had risen to ten thousand, while the Muslims numbered three thousand. The siege by these confederates around Madinah continued for roughly thirty days. The Muslims were in a state of great fear and distress because of this siege and the enemy's combined assault. It was in these circumstances that one day Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) made to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) the request mentioned in this blessed hadith, in response to which the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) taught this supplication. Afterwards, in this battle, Allah favoured the Muslims with His help and support in such a way that He set fierce, violent gusts of wind upon the enemies of the faith, which overturned their cooking pots, tore up their tents, and made their animals break their ropes and bolt; and having afflicted them with all kinds of hardship and distress, He ruined them utterly and they were forced to flee. During this same war, what was in the hearts of about seventy hypocrites came onto their tongues, and they began to say: we were promised the kingdoms of Caesar and Chosroes, and the practical reality is that we cannot even step out to relieve ourselves.
Now if we reflect on present conditions, among the many causes gathered together for the calamities and ruin of the Muslims, one is this too: that in their aims they do not turn towards supplication. At times of calamity and disaster they run about pursuing every kind of measure, lawful and unlawful, but it does not happen that they utter a few words of supplication with a present heart. From the vast mercy of Allah, the acceptance of supplication may be hoped for at every time, in the hardest of hard circumstances, in every place and in every state; it is not restricted to any particular time, condition or place. As the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said on one occasion: I tell you of that thing which will deliver you from your enemies and increase your sustenance — it is that by night and by day (whenever you get the opportunity) you should supplicate Allah (for your need), for supplication is the weapon of the Muslim. (Al-Hadith)
O Allah, have mercy on our present condition. O Allah, You remove the darkness of every night by means of the sun; remove this darkness of the night of unbelief and oppression by the sun of guidance and support. O Allah, bring us out of this darkness. O Allah, protect us — protect our lives, our wealth, our honour, our children and our faith. O Allah, take us into Your protection; take us into the shade of Your mercy; do not hand us over to our enemies. O Allah, be Yourself the guardian of Your religion, and be our guardian too. O Allah, be our Protector, be our Helper, be our Trustee, be our Preserver.
