English translation
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Prophet ﷺ said: "Let no believing man hate a believing woman; for if he dislikes one trait in her, he will be pleased with another."
The standard of soundness and welfare in any human society can be well judged by the state of the married life of its members. If their homes are centres of peace and well-being, that society is the best of societies; and if the matter is the reverse, it is the worst of societies, however unmatched it may be in outward splendour and grandeur. The mutual affection and love of husband and wife for one another is among the signs of Allah. The Almighty says: "And among His signs is that He created for you mates from among yourselves, that you may find repose in them, and He placed between you love and mercy. Surely in that are signs for a people who reflect." (Ar-Rum 30:21)
The religion of Islam has commanded both husband and wife to fulfil their respective duties and obligations and to discharge each other's rights. Just as the Prophet ﷺ made clear in his sayings the rights of husbands over wives, so too he explained the rights of wives over husbands. In this noble hadith the Prophet ﷺ has advised the husband to overlook certain weaknesses and faults in his wife, and in doing so to look towards her good qualities — for every human being is a mixture of virtues and shortcomings, and we should judge and weigh every person as a whole. If only one aspect of someone's personality is kept in view, matters proceed to discord and then to separation. In Surah An-Nisa, verse 19, the divine command is: "And live with them in kindness. For if you dislike them, perhaps you dislike a thing and Allah makes therein much good."
In this verse the husband is strongly urged to live with his wives with good conduct. It is reported that the Prophet ﷺ said: the most perfect of the believers in faith is the one who is best in character and who is gentle and treats his household well. (Bukhari) Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), whose sternness is known to all, said that a man should be like a child with his wife in affection and gentleness of temperament — but when he is among people, he should be a man in full. Husbands should, in following the Prophet ﷺ, lend a hand to their wives in the work of the house, for the Prophet ﷺ used to do many of his household tasks himself (as reported in Tirmidhi).
Likewise it is the husband's responsibility to fully provide maintenance for his wife and children, for Allah Almighty says: "Upon the father is the mothers' provision and their clothing according to what is acceptable." (Al-Baqarah 2:233)
The Prophet's instruction in this regard is: fear Allah concerning women, for you have taken them by the security of Allah and have made their private parts lawful by the word of Allah; upon you is their maintenance and clothing according to what is acceptable (as reported in Muslim). In this connection some scholars hold that, over and above the household expenses, the husband should give his wife a sum as personal spending money and give her full discretion over it, so that she may spend it as she wishes and pleases.
Among these rights is also the husband's consulting his wife in the affairs of the home, for the Prophet ﷺ said: consult women in the matter of their daughters. (Abu Dawud)
