English translation
Narrated ‘Uthmān (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Whoever builds a mosque for Allah, Allah builds for him a house in Paradise.”
Allah says in the Holy Qur’an:
“The mosques of Allah are maintained only by those who believe in Allah and the Last Day, and establish prayer, and give zakāh, and fear none but Allah. It is they who are expected to be among the rightly guided.” (al-Tawbah, 18)
‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the mosques are the houses of Allah upon the earth. In one narration it is stated that in the sight of Allah the mosques are the best places in every city, and the worst and most disliked places are the markets. (Muslim)
When the Prophet ﷺ migrated from Makkah and arrived in Madīnah, the very first thing he ordered was the building of a mosque. From this we learn how important the mosque is for a Muslim society. To take part in building one is a matter of great merit. It is an ongoing charity (ṣadaqah jāriyah), and its reward continues to reach a person even after death. Helping to build it — whether with wealth or with one’s own effort — and fulfilling its rights are all included in this. To help with wealth it is not necessary that a person spend some enormous sum upon it; rather he should contribute whatever he can according to his means. It comes in a hadith that whoever builds a mosque for Allah — even if it be only the size of a bird’s nest, or smaller still — Allah will build for him a house in Paradise. Clearly, building a mosque the size of a bird’s nest can only mean that if a person cannot build a whole mosque, he should give according to his means towards its construction and so have a small share in its building. It should not be understood from this that his house in Paradise will likewise be the size of a nest. The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever has a mosque built for Allah, Allah will build for him a house in Paradise better than it. (Aḥmad) — because Allah looks at intentions. So whoever has a mosque built with complete sincerity will deserve a dwelling from Allah in Paradise, however small his share in it may have been. And if someone’s intention is fame and show, to be seen and heard of by people, then this deed of his has no worth in the sight of Allah, however much wealth he may have spent on it. The Messenger ﷺ also said that among the signs of the Hour is that people will vie with one another in boasting about mosques. (Abū Dāwūd) The wealth spent on building a mosque should be lawful. It comes in a narration that whoever builds a structure for worship — that is, a mosque — out of lawful wealth, Allah will build for him a house of pearl and ruby in Paradise. (Ṭabarānī)
Among the rights of the mosque are praying in it, showing respect to it, keeping it clean and serving it. One Sunnah of the Messenger ﷺ that is generally neglected is perfuming the mosque. It comes in a hadith that the Prophet ﷺ ordered that mosques be built in the neighbourhoods, that they be kept clean and pure, and that they be perfumed. (Abū Dāwūd, Tirmidhī) However, the mosque should be kept simple and adornment and ornamentation avoided, for the Prophet ﷺ said: “I have not been commanded to adorn and decorate the mosques.” (Abū Dāwūd) The narrator of this hadith says: you will surely do so just as the Jews and Christians did. It is also among the rights of the mosque that no buying and selling take place in it (Tirmidhī), that no prescribed punishment (ḥadd) be carried out in it (Abū Dāwūd), and that no announcement be made in it for a lost article (Muslim).
