English translation
Narrated Ḥakīm ibn Ḥizām (may Allah be pleased with him): I asked the Prophet ﷺ (for wealth) and he gave me; then I asked him again and he gave me. Then he said: “This wealth is green and sweet. Whoever takes it with a contented heart (without asking) is blessed in it, and whoever takes it debasing himself (that is, by begging) is not blessed in it — his condition is like that of one who eats and is never satisfied. And the upper hand (that is, the giving hand) is better than the lower hand (that is, the receiving hand).”

The religion of Islam teaches its followers self-respect, and for this reason it is part of its teaching that a person should avoid begging. The Prophet ﷺ used to draw the attention of his Companions to this in various ways, and the Companions accepted these teachings completely and acted upon them fully. In another narration of this same hadith it is related that on hearing the words of the Prophet ﷺ, Ḥakīm ibn Ḥizām (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, by Him who sent you with the truth, I shall never ask anyone for anything after you until I depart from this world.” (Nasā’ī) After that Ḥakīm (may Allah be pleased with him) took nothing from anyone for the rest of his life — so much so that Sayyidunā Abū Bakr and Sayyidunā ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) would offer him his share during their caliphates, but he would not take it.

Allah says in the Holy Qur’an:

“And do not strain your eyes towards that by which We have given enjoyment to various groups of them — the splendour of worldly life — that We may test them therein. The provision of your Lord is better and more enduring.” (Ṭā Hā, 131)

There are many hadiths of the Prophet ﷺ in which he urged his Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) not to beg. In one narration it comes that the Prophet ﷺ said: Who will guarantee me that he will not ask people for anything, and I will guarantee Paradise for him? (Abū Dāwūd) In another narration he said: Whoever seeks to abstain from asking, Allah will keep him free of want; whoever seeks to be self-sufficient, Allah will make him self-sufficient; and whoever asks Allah for the strength to be patient, Allah will grant him patience. (Abū Dāwūd)

The narrator of this hadith, Ḥakīm ibn Ḥizām (may Allah be pleased with him), listened carefully to the teaching of the Prophet ﷺ and acted upon it. He lived to the age of one hundred and twenty years, and such was his state that in a single day he gave away in the path of Allah a hundred slaves, a hundred camels, a hundred cows and a hundred goats. When ‘Abdullāh ibn Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away, Ḥakīm (may Allah be pleased with him) met his son ‘Abdullāh ibn Zubayr and asked how much debt his father had left. He was told: a million. Ḥakīm ibn Ḥizām (may Allah be pleased with him) said: five hundred thousand of it is upon me.

It comes in a narration that the Prophet ﷺ said there are three kinds of hands: first, the hand of Allah, which is the highest of all; second, the giving hand, which is nearest to the hand of Allah; and third, the hand of the one who takes, which is the lowest of all. (Abū Dāwūd) If we examine ourselves in the light of these sayings, we shall find that we have become nothing but the receiving hand — and the receiving hand always stays below. Until we change our conduct we shall remain below, for no one ever honours the habitual beggar.
