کمالِ عدل

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) relates that milk was drawn from a goat kept at the house for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and then water from the well that was at Anas's house was mixed into it, and it was given to the Prophet ﷺ. He ﷺ drank some of it. At that moment Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) was on the Prophet's left side, and a bedouin was on his right. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) submitted: "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, give the remaining milk to Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him)." But the Prophet ﷺ gave it to the bedouin who was on his right, and then said: "The one on the right first, then the one after him (that is, whoever is nearest to him)."

Several things are learned from this hadith. First, that Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioned himself by name out of humility, even though the whole incident took place in his own house — he could have said 'water from the well that was in my house was mixed into it.' Second, that it is the way of the Sunnah for distribution to begin from the right-hand side, and then to proceed in order until it reaches the person on the left. Third, it shows the Prophet's perfect justice and his regard for what is due: despite the fact that Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), who was most dear to the Prophet ﷺ, was present in that gathering, and despite Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) having requested it, the Prophet ﷺ gave precedence to a bedouin — solely in order to begin from the right side.

From this we all learn that in every matter of life, however small and ordinary it may seem, one should take special care to observe the Sunnah.
