English translation
The Mother of the Believers, Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), said that during his final illness the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to me one day: Call your father Abu Bakr and your brother Abd al-Rahman (may Allah be pleased with them) to me so that I may dictate a document, for I fear that (if I do not have the succession of Abu Bakr written down) some aspirant to the caliphate may covet it, and some claimant may say: I am the rightful one. Yet — while Abu Bakr is present no one else can be worthy of the caliphate, and — neither will Allah, nor will the believers, accept the caliphate of anyone other than Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him).
(Muslim)
This hadith clearly points to the caliphate of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) after the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). Without doubt, after the prophets (peace be upon them) the most excellent person on the face of the earth is Abu Bakr al-Siddiq. Among men, the one closest to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was Abu Bakr al-Siddiq. This hadith too shows his superiority and his precedence over all the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them). He was the first man to believe in the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and to be honoured with faith and Islam. There is no battle or important event in the Prophet's life (ﷺ) in which he did not have the honour of participation, companionship and accompaniment. Rather, he is the Companion who was never apart from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) — neither in the age of ignorance nor in the age of Islam. He himself was a Companion, whose parents were also Companions, whose children were also Companions, whose children's children were also Companions — this great distinction, if any Companion possesses it, belongs only to Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him).
