English translation
Abu Sa'id and Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with them) narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: No fatigue, illness, worry, grief or harm befalls a Muslim — even a thorn that pricks him — except that Allah, because of it, forgives his sins.

(Bukhari and Muslim)

In this world times of hardship and difficulty come upon people: sometimes illness comes, sometimes poverty and want, sometimes a cruel enemy torments them, sometimes some kind of grief or anxiety afflicts them, and sometimes in other ways circumstances turn unfavourable. For such occasions the special teaching of Islam is that the servants of Allah should show patience and courage, and remain firm upon their principles with strength and bravery despite countless troubles and calamities. For such people, boundless reward has been promised in the Glorious Qur'an and the noble hadiths.

See how beautifully Allah addresses His beloved Muhammad (ﷺ) regarding the testing of His servants and those who remain patient and steadfast through it: “And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger, and loss of wealth, lives and fruits (that is, straitened livelihood); but give glad tidings to the patient.” (Al-Baqarah: 155)

Allah makes the hardships and calamities that befall people in this world an atonement for the sins of His servants — but this is on condition that the believing servant is patient. In contrast, the one who is impatient and ungrateful not only forfeits this great reward and blessing, but for that faint-heartedness must also bear an added burden of sins.

The elders of the faith therefore said, quite rightly, that “patience” (sabr) is one act of worship equal to a thousand acts of worship, through which a person rises spiritually from one station to a far higher one.

May Allah grant us all patience and courage in trials, and keep us in His protection from impatience and faint-heartedness. (Amin)
