Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "A Muslim is the brother of another Muslim; he does not wrong him, nor does he hand him over (abandoned and unaided, to an enemy). Whoever is engaged in fulfilling the need of his Muslim brother, Allah fulfils his own need. Whoever relieves a Muslim of some distress, Allah will, because of it, relieve him of one of the distresses of the Day of Resurrection. And whoever conceals the faults of a Muslim, Allah will conceal his faults on the Day of Resurrection."

(Bukhari and Muslim)

The important message of this blessed hadith is that Muslims have been directed to live like the members of a single family. Just as a person does not wrong his father, son, or brother, does not like to leave him unaided in his time of need, strives to fulfil any need that arises for him, to relieve him of any hardship, difficulty, or distress he may fall into, and tries to cover up any shortcoming or mistake he may make — exactly this should be the conduct of one Muslim towards another. Allah is pleased by this and grants its best reward in this world and the Hereafter. This is, as it were, an excellent system of collective mutual support; if Muslims act upon it, then along with the good of the Hereafter their worldly life too can become like a paradise. Allah addresses His servants thus:

"(Remember that) all Muslims are but brothers." (Al-Hujurat 10)

That is, since all the believers are brothers to one another, the basis of them all is faith; so the importance of this basis demands that those who believe in one and the same religion should not fight among themselves, but rather — if an enemy is at war with any one of them — they should stand as one another's hands and arms, sympathisers and comforters, well-wishers and friends, and together confront the forces of falsehood.

This hadith also gives a special command that, without any worldly benefit or motive and solely for the pleasure of Allah, the needs and requirements of Muslims should be fulfilled — especially at a time when the forces of disbelief are bent on destroying them. This is a deed of great excellence; the one who comes to the aid of another Muslim in his difficulty will have his own needs and requirements fulfilled by Allah Himself, besides the immense reward he will receive in the Hereafter. If only the Muslims — who have forgotten these luminous teachings of their religion and merely follow in the footsteps of the disbelievers and misguided nations — would even today follow the commands given by the Qur'an and by the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), they could become the rulers of this world and attain the eminence that was the hallmark of our forebears, and rule over the whole world, for which purpose they were created in it.
