English translation
It is narrated from Miqdam ibn Ma’di Karib (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “O people! Remember! Along with the Qur’an, I have been given something else like it (that is, the hadith) from Allah. Beware! A time will come when a well-fed man (that is, an arrogant person), reclining on his couch, will say, ‘O people, this Qur’an is enough for you; whatever it declares lawful is lawful, and whatever it declares unlawful is unlawful.’ Yet whatever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has forbidden is just as forbidden as what Allah has forbidden (even though its prohibition is not mentioned in the Qur’an). The domestic donkey is not lawful for you, nor are the beasts of prey that have fangs (that is, pointed teeth with which they hunt), nor is a lost article belonging to a dhimmi lawful for anyone — except that, if its owner has no need of it, then it is permissible.”

In the religion of Islam, obedience to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is obligatory just as obedience to Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, is obligatory. Allah says: “O you who believe! Obey Allah and obey the Messenger ﷺ, and do not let your deeds go to waste.” (Muhammad: 33) From this it is known that however good a deed may be, if it lies outside the sphere of obedience to Allah and His Messenger ﷺ, it is in vain and wasted.

Regarding obedience to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, this point must be well understood: obedience to the Messenger ﷺ is not confined to his lifetime, but has been made obligatory upon all Muslims who come until the Day of Resurrection after his passing, for he ﷺ is the Seal of the Prophets, as Allah Himself says: “We have sent you to all people only as a bearer of glad tidings and a warner.” (Saba: 28)

This prediction of the Prophet ﷺ has long been proving true: some well-fed people — that is, the wealthy and those intoxicated with the pride of riches — and the barely-lettered, regard the Qur’an alone as sufficient for guidance. These are the people upon whose souls the rulings of hadith and adherence to the Sharia weigh heavily and irksomely. Their slogan is that the only proof in religion is the Qur’an; that the task of the Messenger ﷺ who brought the Qur’an was merely to deliver it, and that our task now is merely to carry out the Qur’anic commands, and that beyond it and besides it nothing is a proof in religion.

See how Allah addresses those who choose the path of deviating from or evading obedience to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: “By your Lord, O Muhammad ﷺ! They will not be believers until they make you the judge in their mutual disputes, then find within themselves no resistance against what you decide, and submit with full acceptance.” (An-Nisa: 65) From the Qur’an and the ahadith it is clear that obedience to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and faith are inseparable: where there is obedience there is faith, and where there is no obedience there is no faith. Keeping the Qur’an and the ahadith in view regarding obedience to the Messenger ﷺ, it is not hard to conclude that, in religion, following the Sunnah is one of the fundamental requirements of faith. May Allah grant all Muslims the ability to be saved from the mischief of denying hadith, and to follow the Sunnah correctly. (Ameen)
