English translation
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Every Muslim is the brother in faith of every other Muslim; (so) let no Muslim wrong another, nor abandon his help and support, nor regard him as lowly and contemptible.” Then, pointing three times towards his chest, he ﷺ said: “Piety (taqwa) is here.” And he said: “It is enough evil for a Muslim that he should regard his Muslim brother as lowly and contemptible” (that is, to hold a Muslim brother lowly and contemptible is so great an evil that, even if a Muslim commits no other sin, he will be called to account in the Hereafter for this one evil). “And (remember) these things of a Muslim are forbidden to another Muslim: his blood, his wealth, and his honour.” (Muslim)

This hadith teaches a fundamental point: that a Muslim is the brother of another Muslim. So even if there is no family relationship between two Muslims, the bond of religion and faith between them is far deeper and more enduring than any bond of colour or race; therefore they are brothers to one another. They must take full care of their brother in faith — neither countenancing any wrong against a brother, nor handing a brother over to any oppressor. It is likewise a violation of a brother's right that one should regard him as contemptible and inferior. If a Muslim does not actually wrong or oppress his brother, but still holds him to be contemptible and inferior, that one evil alone is enough to stain the garment of his faith and character.

Not regarding a brother as contemptible and inferior means that one should not broadcast a Muslim brother's faults or expose his flaws before people so as to disgrace and defame him; and one should not mock any Muslim, however poor and needy, however weak and frail, however luckless and wretched he may be — for one does not know what rank he holds in the sight of Allah. One must not forget that whoever professes the Kalimah and is a follower of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is honourable and worthy of respect, because Allah has said:

“Listen! Honour belongs only to Allah, and to His Messenger ﷺ, and to the believers — but the hypocrites do not know.” (Al-Munafiqun 8)

Thus honour belongs to Allah alone, and He then grants honour and ascendancy to whom He wills, bestowing honour and dignity upon His messengers and those who believe in them, and not upon those who disobey Him. In the sight of Allah, the honoured and dignified will be the people of faith alone — not the disbelievers and the hypocrites.

The matter of taqwa is an inward matter of a Muslim, connected to the heart, into which no one can peer; only Allah can know it. So let one not suppose about oneself, “I am very righteous and abstinent and stand at a lofty station of piety, while such-and-such a Muslim is this or that,” and in that conceit and self-righteousness regard him as inferior and contemptible. Therefore, whoever regards any Muslim brother as lowly and contemptible is himself devoid of the quality of taqwa.

The final words of the hadith mean that no Muslim should do any deed, nor utter any word, that would cause the bloodshed of a Muslim brother, or the loss and waste of his wealth, or harm to his honour. May Allah make us all people who honour and respect our Muslim brothers and who protect their lives, their wealth, and their honour. Amin!
